I Made a Bracelet for the Man Who Didn’t Love Me, and He Wore It for Two Years Chapter 02

I believed that.

I’d met Grant because of his cousin.

Sophie Whitmore and I had been classmates, and we’d been close friends.

Whenever she went out with friends, she’d bring me along.

Whenever we went out with her crowd, I was usually the one lingering at the edge.

Grant, on the other hand…

Grant was different. No matter how cocky or influential the younger people in that crowd acted anywhere else, around him they instinctively lowered their voices.

We’d only crossed paths a handful of times.

Twice, he’d driven me back to campus as a favor to Sophie.

Once, he’d held an umbrella over me in the rain.

And then…

There was that night.

In the dim light, his voice rough, he’d asked, “I remember your last name is Bennett. What’s your first name again?”

I’d been gone for two years.

I’d thought I’d never see him again.

And yet here he was, right in front of me.

Maybe he really hadn’t recognized me.

Relief loosened something in my chest. If he hadn’t recognized me, good. That night could stay buried. I never wanted to revisit it.

I took a cab home alone.

When I got there, I checked my phone.

It was after five, dawn just beginning to break.

I showered and managed a few hours of sleep.

When I woke again, it was already the following afternoon.

A knock at the door woke me.

Thinking Vivian had come back, I hurried over and opened it.

Instead, Grant was standing outside.

His gaze caught on me for half a second.

Then, perfectly polite, he asked,

“Did I wake you? I didn’t know you were asleep.”

I told him it was fine.

In his usual unhurried tone, he explained, “I’m here to pick up a few things for Vivian.”

I nodded and stepped aside.

“Come in.”

For several seconds, though, I heard no footsteps behind me.

Confused, I turned around.

His eyes were on me.

Then, slowly, he said,

“Next time you answer the door dressed like that, make sure you know who’s on the other side.”

Before I could answer, he walked straight past me and headed for Vivian’s room.

I looked down at myself.

I was wearing pajamas.

Long sleeves, long pants.

I wasn’t showing anything.

Still, heat crept into my face for no reason I could explain.

I didn’t dare linger in the living room. I slipped back into my bedroom.

But after that, I couldn’t fall asleep again.
