Part of it was because that annoying system had finally disappeared. As for the rest, even I couldn’t explain why I felt so relieved. Adrian’s Alpha pressure kept growing heavier.

My instincts made me take two quick steps away from him. It wasn’t until I hurried all the way home that I finally felt the weight of his stare disappear from my back. I’d barely finished dinner

when Ryan called.

“Elena, I need to tell you something.”

He sounded a little awkward.

“I wasn’t deliberately ignoring you last week. That Alpha you grew up with came to see me and told me to stay away from you…”

I frowned and immediately defended Adrian.

“That’s impossible. Adrian doesn’t go around hitting people.”

Ryan gave two dry laughs on the other end.

‘He didn’t hit me. He just happened to get proof that I cheated on a quiz last week…”

Adrian had used that to threaten Ryan into staying away from me? Why? My thoughts suddenly became a mess, yet mixed into all that confusion was a strange little spark of happiness I couldn’t

explain.

Someone knocked on the door. While Ryan continued complaining about Adrian, I opened it.

“I’m serious, Elena. Your childhood friend acts like he doesn’t have a temper at all when he’s around you, but with me, he had no problem turning his Alpha pressure on me.

“My legs almost gave out when he stared me down that day. You should seriously stay away from him.”

The air went completely still. Then the phone was gently taken out of my hand by Adrian, who was standing right in front of me.

“Yeah. Thanks for the warning.”

Ryan went dead silent. The call ended a second later. Something about Adrian felt very wrong today, especially his eyes. They were dark and tense, like he was barely holding himself together.

“Elena, I don’t think Ryan is a good guy. What do you think?”

He handed my phone back. His voice was soft, but he hadn’t reined in his Alpha pressure at all. I

stared at him blankly.

“I can’t stand him, and even I never badmouthed him.”

“But he gets to badmouth me?”

I swallowed and instinctively nodded. Adrian lowered his voice, almost coaxing me into agreeing

with him.

“Then don’t like him anymore, okay?”

I answered automatically.

“Okay… Wait, no.”

I’d never liked Ryan in the first place. What was Adrian even talking about?

“Elena, why is it that after all these years, when you finally started liking someone, it wasn’t me?”

My eyes widened. My heart seemed to skip a beat, and for a moment, I had no idea what to say. There was obvious disappointment in Adrian’s eyes, maybe even a little hurt.

“I’ve waited for you all these years. Why did you have to fall for someone else?”

He looked at me.

“Is he more handsome than me?”

I shook my head. Adrian narrowed his eyes slightly.

“Does he smell better than me?”

I shook my head again. His fingers slowly tugged his collar open.

“Is he better to bite than I am?”

I was just about to shake my head again when I suddenly realized something was wrong.

“I’ve never bitten him. How would I know?”

Adrian lowered his eyes and stared at me. His voice dropped even lower, rough and hoarse.

“Liar.”

“I saw it myself. You wanted to bite him today.”

He reached out and gently pulled me closer. And closer still, until his heartbeat was thundering in my ears. Adrian’s cool, pale neck and taut shoulder were suddenly inches from my face. The itch spread from my teeth all the way into my chest.

“Elena, you haven’t bitten me in almost ten days.”

His voice was nearly a plea.

“Please. Just one bite.”

“I promise I feel better under your teeth than Ryan ever could. Try me…’
