I Haunted His Dreams After He Dumped Me For My Roommate Chapter 06

My wrist was bare. No mole.

I’d covered it with concealer.

When we dated, Ethan used to hold my hand loosely, distractedly. He couldn’t remember clearly.

His gaze traveled upward, lingering darkly on my collarbone, like he was verifying something.

I yanked my hand free.

“Sorry. I was being an idiot.” His tone was flat. He stepped aside.

Back at my seat, the girl beside me asked, “You get bit by mosquitoes?”

I glanced down-my collarbone had been exposed during that scuffle with Ethan. The hickey from the dream a few nights ago was still there. He’d bitten down hard, but now it was very, very faint.

My heart stumbled as I remembered the way Ethan had stared at that spot.

I looked up.

Ethan stood with a couple of guys near the open terrace doors, where the breeze cut through. Tall, long legs, he cupped his hands to light someone else’s cigarette but didn’t smoke one himself.

He was naturally the center of any room yet completely impossible to hold onto.

Everything came too easily to him. So he always wanted the best. Girlfriends included.

The girl beside me sighed. “It’s hard to picture Ethan ever being obsessed with something. Like, when has he ever not gotten what he wanted?”

The wind ruffled his hair.

He suddenly turned, gaze slicing through the crowd straight at me.

I quickly looked away.

The girl kept talking. “Vera’s gonna tell him she likes him tomorrow. You think Ethan’s gonna go for it?”

I thought of my deal with the System.

“Probably.” I said quietly, “He’s been into her since the first time he saw her.

Three in the morning.

I woke to the sound of wind.

Getting up for water, I noticed the living room was dark except for the blue glow of the TV.

Ethan and his friend sat there with headphones, playing video games.

His friend asked, “How come you were calling Vera every day, but now that you’ve actually seen her you’re so distant?”

Ethan radiated this low-pressure, barely-suppressed irritation. “I can’t explain it. Something about her just feels different from the dream. When I bring up stuff from the dream, she thinks I’m

joking.”

“I haven’t dreamed about ‘her’ in days.’

A cat yowled outside.

Both of them turned toward my direction.

I slipped back into my room before they could spot me.
