“Yours!” Amy growled.

Then she blacked out cold.

No one spoke.

Because she was right.

They were the ones who chose not to believe me.

The rain kept coming down, harder and harder.

Huer said nothing.

He stood at the edge of the stone platform, head bowed over me.

His fingers brushed my hair.

“Time to lay her to rest,” he said softly.

“Everyone, take one last look at her.”

Elim walked over.

He crouched in front of me.

His hand shook as he touched my face.

“Sanna…”

“I’m sorry,” he said.

“I’m really sorry.”

Kasdan came up.

He took my hand, lifted it to his lips, and kissed it.

“If I could go back, I’d believe you. I swear I would.”

Skarlarton knelt in front of me.

He pressed his forehead to my feet.

His shoulders trembled.

“Little sister…”

“I was wrong,” he finally admitted.

“I really was.”

Each of them said sorry.

But those words meant nothing now.

At last, Huer came over.

He didn’t cry.

He hadn’t cried the whole time.

He just looked at me.

For a long, long time.

“All of you, step back,” he said. “I’m sealing the grave!”

Elim and the others stood up and backed away.

Huer bent down to lift me.

But his body swayed.

Blood welled at the corner of his mouth.

“Huer?” Elim frowned. “What happened to you?”

Huer didn’t answer.

He kept going, picked me up, and laid me in the grave.

Then he turned.

Looked at the three of them.

“The wine you drank today,” he said. “I poisoned it.”

The three of them went pale at the same time.

“Are you out of your mind?”

Kasdan clutched his chest, face white. “What the hell are you doing?”

Huer smiled.

It was the first time I’d ever seen him smile.

And the last.

“I want every last one of you to be buried with her.”

He pulled a small vial from his clothes.

Twisted the cap off.

Downed it in one go.

Then he tossed the bottle, walked over, and lay down in my grave.

Right beside me.

“Sanna.”

He turned his head to look at me.

“I’m here to keep you company.”

“Don’t!”

I screamed from the air.

But he couldn’t hear me.

No one could.

Elim dropped to his knees, clutching his chest.

Kasdan fell to the ground.

Skarlarton, in his bear form, crashed down.

Everyone fell.

The tribe panicked and scattered.

The whole burial ground was piled with bodies.

Only Huer-

His eyes were still open.

Staring at the sky.

At the place where I floated.

“Sanna…”

Blood trickled from his mouth, but he was smiling.

“I know you’re there.”

“I know you can hear me,” he said.

“The best thing I ever did… was fall for you.”

His eyes slowly closed.

His hand slid down.

I dove, desperate, trying to grab him.

But my hands passed right through him.

I knelt beside him.

And cried.

But there were no tears.

I was already dead.

I couldn’t do anything.
