I Refused To Be His Second Best Chapter 07

On Saturday, I took Ronan out to dinner as promised.

I’d booked the place two days in advance-a popular Thai restaurant.

It was my first time eating out with him alone.

He flipped through the menu and only ordered two dishes:

tom yum soup and Thai stir-fried noodles.

I told him to get more.

He smiled and handed the menu back.

“Two people don’t need that much.”

I knew he was trying to save me money.

Those were the cheapest items on the menu.

A warmth spread through my chest.

I didn’t say anything-just quietly added a crab curry before the waiter left.

While we waited, we chatted casually.

The waiter brought over a plate of mango sticky rice. “Complimentary.”

Before I could answer, Ronan spoke up.

“Thanks, but please take it back. She’s allergic to mango.”

I paused.

I was severely allergic to mango-just a tiny bit would give me a rash all over.

Faye knew. And I’d told Stellan too.

He’d said “got it” at the time.

But once, when he brought back snacks from abroad, he checked every ingredient list-avoided all

the nuts-

but forgot the production line also processed mango.

I ended up in the hospital that night.

I’d convinced myself it was just a slip.

But two years in, I had to admit-I’d always been a blind spot to him.

Ronan knew because during a freshman class dinner.

He’d tried to pour me mango juice, and I’d declined.

“You have a good memory,” I said.

“You remember everyone’s dietary restrictions?”

The restaurant lights dimmed a little.

He looked up at me, the soft glow caught in his eyes.

His voice was calm.

“I don’t remember everything.”

“Just some things I can’t forget.”

My breath caught for a second.

Then out of the corner of my eye-I saw two people walk in.

Stellan and Faye.
