Fiancé?Sorry, My Memory Was Wiped Chapter 03

Fiancé?Sorry, My Memory Was Wiped Chapter 03

Marcus stared at me like I’d just told the world’s worst joke.

“Shade, when did you start playing dumb?”

“You’re acting like some lunatic who’s completely lost it…”

“God, I really don’t want to play this game with you anymore.”

I lowered my eyes.

A mocking smile tugged at my lips.

Marcus.

Did you really think I couldn’t live without you?

When I stayed silent, the last of his patience snapped.

“Cool off and get your head straight.”

“Evie’s fever won’t come down. I need to stay with her.”

The door slammed shut behind him.

The next morning, my eyes landed on the knife on my nightstand.

In the thin morning light, the engraving on the handle was perfectly clear.

[M.H. & E.H.]

E.H.

Evelyn Hart.

This wasn’t my knife.

I opened the hidden compartment in my nightstand.

My knife lay quietly inside.

Its handle read:

[M.H. & C.V.]

So that was it.

Even the keepsake from everything we’d survived together…

He’d made Evelyn a copy.

I didn’t hesitate.

I had my access credentials for the Belladonna safe house permanently revoked.

Then I took my luggage and checked into a cash-only hostel downtown.

I was surrounded by noisy, unfamiliar civilian life.

Strange.

Noisy.

Dirty.

I had to stay alert every second.

But damn…

I could finally breathe.

Freedom.

The next day, an urgent order from Marcus came through.

Report to the on-site medical clinic.

I didn’t want to go.

But the funds in my accounts hadn’t been fully converted yet.

I couldn’t afford more trouble.

So I went.

The second I stepped into the familiar hallway, a figure came at me fast.

Marcus slammed me against the metal wall.

His forearm pinned my throat.

There was pure fury in his eyes.

“Tell me.”

“What the hell did you do to Evie?”

His voice shook with barely contained rage.

“You know what she went through as a kid.”

“You know she has severe PTSD.”

“And because of your pathetic jealousy, you’re trying to drive her insane?”

“It wasn’t me.”

The pressure on my throat made my voice rough.

“I haven’t set foot in this place for two days.”

Dana and several other senior operatives stepped into the hall.

Not one of them tried to stop Marcus.

Their eyes held nothing but suspicion.

“Shade, there’s no point denying it now,” Dana said.

“Who else could dodge every camera, sneak in here at night, and terrorize Evie without even Marcus noticing?”

“Only you.”

Right on cue, Evelyn’s tearful voice came from inside the room.

I shoved Marcus away and walked in.

Evelyn was curled up in the corner of the bed.

I looked straight at her.

“Look at me.”

“Was the person you saw last night me?”

She jerked her head up like she’d been bitten by a snake.

Her pupils blew wide.

Then she screamed.

“No! Don’t touch me!”

“I’ll give Marc back to you!”

“Please, just leave me alone!”

She grabbed the metal cup from the nightstand and hurled it at me.

I twisted aside.

The rim clipped my brow.

Blood slid down past the corner of my eye.

Marcus immediately moved in front of Evelyn.

“Get out!”

“Stay the hell away from her!”

Everyone crowded around her.

They shielded her in the center and murmured soothing words.

Every look they gave me was full of blame.

I wiped the blood from my face and walked out.

After I cleaned the wound, Marcus came looking for me.

His expression was still grim.

“Evie’s condition isn’t stable.”

“Try to be understanding.”

I met his eyes.

“It’s fine.”

“I won’t hold it against her.”

“You have missions to run and a patient to take care of.”

“Must be exhausting.”

He visibly froze.

Like that was the last response he’d expected from me.

“Good.”

“I’m glad you understand.”

He lifted a hand toward the cut above my eyebrow.

I stepped back before he could touch me.

His hand stopped in midair.

After a moment, he slowly lowered it.

His fingers curled into a fist.

I looked at him without a trace of emotion.

“But I need to make one thing clear.”

“This had nothing to do with me.”

A mocking curve touched his mouth.

His arrogance left no room for doubt.

“Who else in Belladonna could pull something like this off?”

“What, you think Evie framed herself?”

“She’s too innocent to ever do something like that.”

I looked at the absolute certainty on his face.

Suddenly, explaining anything felt pointless.

I drew in a slow breath.

“Marcus, we…”

“Marcus! Get in here!”

Dana hurried toward us.

“Evie’s having another episode.”

“She’s curled up in the corner crying.”

“None of us can get near her.”

Marcus’s expression changed instantly.

He turned and rushed back toward the room.

I watched him disappear.

And silently finished the sentence in my head.

Marcus, we’re over.

Tomorrow was my second memory-overwrite session.

After that, Marcus…

Belladonna…

All of this sickening mess…

Would be sealed away for good.

I turned and headed out of that suffocating place.

I’d barely reached downstairs when I heard soft footsteps behind me.

I started to turn.

Too slow.

Something hard slammed into the back of my skull.

Everything went black.
