The Nameless Luna Chapter 02

“Did you see the photo I sent you? That crystal ball was just a promotional giveaway, but she was so touched she almost cried.”

“She really has no shame. She knows she isn’t their real daughter, yet she still refuses to leave…”

So that’s why…

I lower my head and return to the kitchen.

The food on the counter has already been dumped into the trash.

Dad, who is pouring himself a glass of water, glances at me.

“You. I thought you weren’t going to eat, so I threw it away.”

I quietly hum in response.

I should never have expected affection from people who are not related to me by blood. I was the one who got greedy.

Actually, after Esther came back, I had asked to leave.

Back then, Mom cried and tried to persuade me for an entire afternoon.

“Whether you’re our biological daughter or not, we raised you for sixteen years. You are my daughter. You are still a member of our pack.”

Dad added, “I asked around. Your biological parents passed away years ago. If you leave, you have nowhere to go. You’ll only become a rouge.”

“Esther just can’t accept you right now. Once you spend more time together, you’ll become sisters.”

That was why I stayed.

But every time Esther saw Mom and Dad treating me well, she would break down and threaten to kill herself.

At first, Mom and Dad pretended not to care about me in order to comfort her.

But the longer they kept up the act, the more convincing it became.

I sit in the attic of the pack house, trying to drink water to distract myself from the hunger twisting in my stomach.

I look at the email from the Royal Pack, and my heart slowly settles.

This family trip is planned to celebrate both Esther’s and my university graduation.

Mom and Dad are worried about Esther’s anxiety over finding a job, so they specially take her on a trip to relax.

Not a single person asks about my job search. No one cares.

That afternoon, Stephen comes to the packhouse with two gifts.

One is a classic LV monogram messenger bag, bought directly from the boutique, with a receipt for twenty-three thousand dollars inside.

He personally hands it to Esther, “This is the bag you said you wanted before. See if it suits you.”

Esther puts the bag on and spins around in front of the mirror, admiring herself.

Then Stephen takes the other gift and follows me back to the attic, “Open it. See if you like it.”

I have no expectations.

Every gift he gives Esther is expensive and carefully chosen. Mine is always the cheapest.

I open the package. Inside is a discounted Coach bag. It costs one-tenth of Esther’s gift, but it is still more than I expect.

“You need a bag too.”

The corners of my lips lift slightly.

But before the smile can fully form, he speaks again.

“Didn’t you say you received an offer from the Black Moon Pack’s Warrior Program? Reject it and find another job.”

“Why?”

“I asked my Beta to look into it. Esther applied for the same position. If you give up your spot, she can take it.”

His tone is casual, as if he is talking about the weather.

“You took your Mom and Dad away from Esther for sixteen years. This is what you owe her.”

Only then do I understand.

This bag was never a gift. It is payment for giving up my job opportunity to Esther.

I look at him and ask quietly, “How long has it been since you last called me by my name?”

Stephen frowns, looking at me like I am throwing a childish tantrum.

“Don’t start talking about pointless things. The deadline is tomorrow. Reject the offer today.”

“When Esther came back, you comforted me and said that even if my parent didn’t want me anymore, you would still choose me. But for six years, you haven’t called me by my name once.”

I stare at him, “I’m your mate, aren’t I?”

Everything I say is the truth. But Stephen’s expression grows darker.

“If Esther hadn’t been switched at birth, she would have been the one who grew up with me. Don’t act like you’re the victim after benefiting from it for sixteen years. You’re forcing me to reject you.”

“Remember to turn down the Black Moon Pack’s offer.”

With those words, Stephen turns and walks out of the attic.

Not long after he leaves, Esther’s deliberately sweetened voice echoes from downstairs.

“Stephen, come to my room and turn on the air conditioner with me. Don’t go to the attic so often. You might get heatstroke.”

Stephen lets out a low laugh, “I remember you like lattes, right? I ordered one before I came. It’s already been delivered to the entrance of the pack house.”

Two seconds later, the door opens. Then comes the sound of a straw being pushed into a drink.

Two sounds. Two cups. None for me.

My phone suddenly lights up with a notification.

I have been added to a new group chat. The Royal Pack’s Head Warrior tags me.

“Genevieve Sinclair, you only need to bring your clothes. We have already prepared all your other necessities.”

“See you in three days. Welcome to the Royal Pack.”

The other members send a flood of welcome emojis.

My vision slowly blurs. Tears fall onto my phone screen.

In this family, I am called “you.”

Two thousand kilometers away, they say: “Welcome, Genevieve Sinclair.”
