The Don’s Fake Sister in Law Chapter 04

The Don’s Fake Sister in Law Chapter 04

I reached past Nathan and shut the closet door before he could move. “Ethan left his phone here. If it’s urgent, you can always call his consigliere on the secure line.”

Ethan let out a breath he didn’t know he’d been holding-a near-death experience, soaked in cold

sweat.

He regretted everything.

If he’d just come clean at the start, he could’ve explained.

But climbing out of a closet now? Nathan would never believe it.

Right now, Ethan wanted to tear me apart. My phone started blowing up with his messages:

[Get Nathan out of here!]

[Make him leave! Now!]

[Claire, you venomous woman. When I get out of here, I’ll feed you to the wolves.]

[Think you can drive a wedge between us brothers? Useless.]

[Claire, you’ll pay for what you’ve done today.]

My smile didn’t waver as I glanced at my screen, then turned back toward the closet. “Nathan, want a change of clothes for the night?”

Ethan’s face went ashen. His heart was in his throat.

[Sorry, I spoke out of turn. Please forget it.]

[Don’t open that door again. Please.]

[Claire, are you trying to destroy the Campbell family?]

My phone kept buzzing. I frowned in annoyance and typed back: [Don Campbell, you’re being noisy. \ I’m putting you on mute.]

[Claire!!]

His next message came through, but this time no alert sounded.

Ethan went pale. He resorted to a different language: money. A bank notification chimed on my

phone like music to my ears.

I graciously stepped away from the closet and pulled out a new set of men’s pajamas from one of my shopping bags.

I handed them to Nathan. “I forgot I bought these this afternoon. Here, wear these instead.”

Nathan’s gaze flickered toward the closet, but he took the pajamas with a quiet thanks.

“Claire, I’m not trying to stir things up,” he said carefully, “but Ethan doesn’t seem like the

responsible type.”

“Leaving his girlfriend alone this late, going out without his phone-almost like he doesn’t want you to know where he really is. Who knows what he does out there at night?”

“In the family, there’s no shortage of people trying to throw women at the Don.”

“If I had a girlfriend, I’d never treat her like that. I’d check in constantly so she never had to worry. I’d make sure she had protection. Your ex would’ve done the same, right?”

Nathan was fishing, his intentions barely concealed.

I sat on the edge of the bed, letting the word “ex” hang in the air. A flicker of something crossed my

face.

Hooked up at him, then quickly away, my eyes reddening as I forced a brittle smile. “He was thoughtful. I always felt safe with him.”

Nathan instinctively reached to wipe my tears, but stopped halfway, catching himself. His hand dropped, voice hoarse. “If he was that good, why’d you break up?”

He held my gaze, demanding an answer.

I brushed the tears from my face. “He was wonderful. I was the problem. I couldn’t make him trust me completely, couldn’t give him the security he needed.”

“He always held back-kept secrets, tried so hard to protect me. It hurt him, being with me. Breaking up was probably for the best.”

Nathan turned away, his voice breaking into sobs. “If… if he came back for you, would you take

him?”
