Eric glanced at Serena with polished disdain.

“Ma’am, you have no class.”

“This is a high-end event. Shut your filthy mouth.”

“you-” Serena’s face went red.

Before she could fire back, Mr. Ashford called her away.

Eric and I hit it off.

We talked easily, naturally.

Then Knox appeared at my side.

“Hello. I’m Chloe’s friend. Knox Sterling.”

He said friend.

But the way he said it made it sound like a claim.

Eric took him for my boyfriend.

“Wow-you two make a great couple.”

“Mr. Sterling, you’re lucky to have someone as brilliant and hardworking as Chloe.”

I opened my mouth to explain that I wasn’t his girlfriend-

But a glance at Knox’s lips told me he was barely holding back a smile.

The gala began.

The host invited the top three exam scorers to speak.

I’d prepared a talk on asset management from a fresh angle.

I was ready–and I overdelivered. Poised. Confident.

Five minutes of speaking.

Then thunderous applause.

Everyone in that room remembered the small-town girl who’d taken the stage with nothing but

nerve and a vision.

That moment, I earned more than applause.

I said goodbye to the girl I used to be-timid, uncertain, invisible.

Serena stood in the corner, staring at me like I was a stranger.

Mr. Ashford muttered, “I told you to study.”

“She had far less than you, and look where she is now.’

“She gilded herself and climbed into high society.”

“You got kicked out for skipping class—after all the time and money I wasted on you.”

Serena bit back her anger. “I know, Dad. I’ll do better.”

After I stepped down, people came up to me.

Business cards, handshakes, offers.

They liked what they’d heard.

If I was interested, they’d let me manage part of their portfolios.

I accepted every card, spoke to every person-fluent, poised, present.

Knox watched me.

Approval in his eyes.

Is it just me, or does Chloe feel like the real female lead?

Same. She’s the main character now.

Later, I slipped into the powder room to touch up my lipstick.

Knox followed.

His eyes burned. “Chloe. You’re exceptional.”

“Interested in being my private asset manager?”

I remembered the string of zeros on his bank statement.

If I managed his money, I knew I could grow it.

“Salary?” I asked. “Cut?”

“One hundred thousand a year. Thirty percent of growth.”

The base was fair.

The cut was generous-most people would be lucky to get three percent from a first client.

I’offered a counter.

“One hundred thousand. Ten percent. We can renegotiate later.”

He smiled. “Deal.”

I finished my lipstick. Footsteps echoed in the hallway.

Serena’s voice, getting closer.

Knox pulled me into a side room.

The door clicked shut just before she walked in.

She sat down at the vanity, on the phone, complaining loud enough for the whole floor to hear.

“Chloe’s so calculated.”

“You should’ve seen her tonight-stealing the show, stealing Knox.”

“Honestly, I can’t stand it when someone ordinary climbs up and steps on me.”

“But I know how to handle her now.”

“She’s been gone three months-nothing to pin on her at work.”

“So I’ll just have to create something. Something that puts her away.”
