I felt as if I had been asleep for a very long time.

In my dreams, I saw my parents’ tear-streaked faces.

“Baby, don’t be afraid. You’ll get better. No matter what it

costs, Mom and Dad will get you well.”

So when the System found me, I agreed without a second

thought.

The System had frozen time in my original world. When I

left, it had also been just before Thanksgiving. Mom had

promised to bring home my favorite pumpkin pie.

In the dream, it seemed I had completed the mission and returned home, but I couldn’t find my parents anywhere.

I searched every room in the house, but they were gone.

“Dad! Mom!”

I woke up crying. The face that swam into view was Matteo’s,

his features a distorted echo of my own.

Seeing I was awake, he didn’t mock me. He just hesitated, then spoke.

“Did you dream of Mom and Dad? Have you forgotten what they said before they died? They wanted us to live good lives. If you keep trying to die, you’ll only cause them more pain.

Listen to me. Just be quiet.”

I screamed at him, “You’re not my brother! I’m an only child!

This is just a mission world. I have to go. I have to leave. I

need to go back to my own world!”

Matteo’s face went pale. He gave a bitter smile.

“So Seraphina was right. You really have gone insane.”

I was sick of this place, sick to my bones. I pushed myself up and slammed my head against the headboard.

“I want to die! I want to leave!”

Matteo forcibly injected me with a sedative. My body went limp. My limbs stopped responding to my commands, and

soon, I couldn’t even speak.

“I can’t watch you hurt yourself like this. With this injection, you’ll still be able to feel, but you won’t be able to move or speak. When you’ve thought things through, you can come back. If you’re willing to change, you can still be my sister.”

I glared at him.
