My Boyfriend and Best Friend Whispered in Spanish, My First Language Chapter 06

Derek froze, his mouth opening but no words coming out.

I turned and walked away

He rushed after me, only to be stopped by the people beside me.

“Elara! Wait!”

I never slowed down.

The elevator doors opened, and I stepped inside.

Derek tried to follow, but Jasper blocked him with one arm.

“Mr. Holloway, know your place.”

The doors slid shut, and his panicked face disappeared from view.

I knew that expression all too well.

Every time I’d caught him, he’d worn that exact same expression.

Then he’d patiently twist everything around until I was the one comforting him.

Not this time.

When I got back to the hotel, my grandfather was having coffee.

He looked up and asked in Spanish, “Was that the young man you told me you were dating?”

I nodded.

He set his cup down, his gaze turning cold.

“You spent five years with him. Was it worth it?”

I was quiet for a moment. “No.”

He sighed and patted my hand gently.

“Come back to Valdoria. The company needs you.”

I didn’t answer right away.

“Grandpa, I want to finish things here first.”

He looked at me for a long moment, then smiled.

“You’ve grown up, Elara.”

“When you were little, you’d come home crying every time someone hurt you.”

“Now you know how to fight back.”

That night, I finally checked the phone I’d left on silent.

147 missed calls. Hundreds of messages. Over a hundred texts.

Every single one was from Derek..

[Elara, I was wrong. Please come back.]

[Let’s talk. I’ll explain everything.]

[Are you really gonna throw away five years?]

[You can’t do this to me over work.]

[Elara, you’re being so cruel.]

Then his tone changed.

[Did you know all along? Were you just waiting to watch me crash and burn?]

[Elara, I never knew you were this calculating. After everything I’ve done for you…]

I read every message. I felt nothing.

Everything he’d done for me? That was sheer ridiculous.

The night I was burning with a fever, he’d given everything to Mira instead.

I deleted every message. Then I blocked his number and his account.

The next day, news came from Keller & Associates.

Derek had been suspended.

The Soraya project was the company’s top priority that year.

After losing the deal, no one could protect him.

Mira was dragged down with him.

Her job as a Spanish translator was only ever there because Derek pulled strings to get her in.

Now that he’d fallen, she was the first one thrown under the bus.

Later that afternoon, I got a message from Connie. I’d met her during one of Keller & Associates’ company

retreats.

[Elara, you have no idea. Mira was at the office crying and making a huge scene today. Kept saying Derek

forced her into all of it.]

[Derek got so mad they started screaming at each other in front of everyone.]

I replied with one word: [Okay.]

Connie sent another message.

[They’re blaming each other now. It’s a complete disaster.]

I didn’t respond.

I set my phone aside, picked up my coffee, and looked out at the bright afternoon sun.

For five years, I’d poured nearly all of myself into Derek.

Now I could finally start living for myself.

That evening, senior leadership from Keller & Associates reached out again.

They asked for one more chance and submitted an entirely new proposal.

This time, everything had been reworked. The terms were far better all around.

After reviewing the draft, I agreed to give them another chance.

But this time, Derek wasn’t leading the project.

The company’s chairman would handle negotiations himself.

As I walked out of the conference room, someone rushed up and blocked my way.

“Elara!”
