She pressed her lips together and pulled out her phone.

“Say that again. I’ll record it and send it to him.”

I gave her a pained look. Oh my god. This is so uncomfortable.

Miles caught my wrist, his eyes going cold. “We don’t owe you an explanation.”

His fingers were cool, but the spot where he held me burned. Walking out of the diner hand in hand,

I saw Jenna pull out her phone and snap a photo of our backs.

“Are you… a little upset?”

I chewed my sandwich and stole glances at him.

He ate quietly, making a simple breakfast look like something elegant.

“People say you’ve liked Carter for years.”

His voice came out a little hoarse, his throat bobbing.

“Rowan, back at the dorm Carter trashes you. I think… he’s no good.”

So my side was love at first sight. His side was a long-held crush.

My ego inflated about ten sizes. I grinned as I stared at the long number above Miles’s head.

My smiling clearly embarrassed him. His ears flushed red and he stopped talking.

I leaned closer and poked his cheek, puffed up from chewing.

“If he’s so terrible, how about I switch and like someone else instead?”

He turned to look at me. The stars in his eyes flickered, but the blush crept from his ears onto his

cheeks.

“Can you just switch who you like?”

I kept a straight face and fed him nonsense.

“Sure I can. If someone treats me well enough, I’ll switch.”

Miles fell silent. He lowered his head and ate quietly, and I couldn’t tell what he was thinking.

The second I got home, I saw someone in the living room.

Thinking it was my dad, I headed for my room-until a hand clamped around my arm.

I startled. Carter.

His face was dark. His eyes were a barely leashed storm.

“Where did you go?”

I tried to pull my arm free and frowned at him.

“Getting breakfast.”

“Where’s mine?”
