Even his voice sounded good, calm like still water.

“You’re not scared walking home alone?”

I instantly regretted opening my mouth. What was wrong with me?

His lips might have twitched, but he didn’t answer.

“I mean, it kind of looks like we’re going the same way. Want to walk together…?”

My voice shrank. Embarrassment was about to swallow me whole. The butterflies in my stomach were pretty much dead. My stupid mouth killed them.

The word came from beside me, and the butterflies were back.

The whole way, I threw everything I had into making conversation.

I pulled out my phone, my hand shaking. First time I’d ever hit on someone. I kept stealing glances at the number above his head to hype myself up.

I forced the words out and nearly bit my tongue.

The air went quiet. His few seconds of silence made me want to crawl into a hole and die.

That obvious brush-off made my face burn. Before I could think, I spun around and bolted. “Okay—sorry, that was out of line…”

Even after I rushed into the neighborhood, my heart was still hammering. My nose even stung a little.

God, that was humiliating. He must think I’m insane.

The second I stepped inside my house and collapsed my umbrella, Carter’s voice came from behind me.

He closed the distance in a few strides. The scent of a girl’s perfume clung to him, even stronger up close.

“I thought I saw you back at the intersection. Were you walking with someone?”

He was breathing hard—clearly he’d run here.

“Looked like a guy. Do I know him? You…”

Before he could finish, my mom walked out of the kitchen holding a plate.

“You’re home! Oh—Carter’s got a girlfriend?”
