My mother yanked her hand away.

“No one wants to become part of the Pierce family.”

Nolan’s father tugged at his wife’s sleeve and glanced at everyone gathered in the room before speaking in a

measured tone.

“No matter how you look at it, Nolan was wrong to put Ruby and her parents in this position. On behalf of our family, I apologize to Mr. and Mrs. Bennett and to Ruby.”

He lowered his head in apology.

“Both families have spent a long time preparing for this wedding. It hasn’t been easy for these two to come this far, and all their friends and relatives are already here. We shouldn’t let all that effort go to waste because my foolish son behaved badly, should we?”

“Ruby, you’re a good young woman. Please listen to me. Let’s hold the ceremony first, and once we’re behind closed doors, I’ll deal with Nolan myself.”

My father cut him off before he could continue.

“This is no longer only between Ruby and Nolan. Mr. Pierce, don’t pressure my daughter. Her being kind does not mean she should be expected to swallow every humiliation and let people mistreat her.”

“At first, Nolan secretly took the makeup artist my wife paid $15,000 to book and sent her to someone else. We didn’t make an issue of it. We only wanted Susan to come over quickly so Ruby’s makeup wouldn’t be

delayed on her wedding day.”

“But Lila’s family still refused to let Susan come over and wanted her to do Lila’s mother’s makeup too. I spoke to Nolan myself and told him to send Susan over so he could show me he was serious about marrying Ruby. He couldn’t even do that.”

“We are deeply disappointed. This is no longer just about makeup. Your family tried to force my daughter to

accept being humiliated and mistreated on her own wedding day.”

Mrs. Pierce muttered under her breath, “Making this much of a fuss over a makeup artist is ridiculous.”

Mr. Pierce shot her a hard look, and she immediately fell silent.

At some point, Nolan had entered the room. His voice was thick with tears when he spoke to me.

“Ruby, I thought about everything carefully on the way here. I was wrong. I shouldn’t have taken advantage of how much you loved me and kept expecting you to give way. On our wedding day, I even helped someone else humiliate you. I’m the one who ruined our wedding.”

“But you’re the only woman I love. Marrying you has always been my dream. Please give me one more

chance.”

“No. I’ve already given you plenty of chances.”

I shook my head and stared at the man I had loved for seven years.

“You knew better than anyone how much thought and effort I put into this wedding. I wanted to marry you without a single regret because I loved you.”

“But behind my back, you took the makeup artist my mother paid $15,000 to hire for me and had her do

someone else’s makeup. You would rather let Susan do Lila’s mother’s makeup than send her here to do your bride’s makeup.”

“I don’t have it in me to marry you anymore.”

Eleven o’clock arrived, the time the ceremony had been scheduled to begin.

The lavish ballroom glittered beneath the lights, and every seat was filled.

But the bride and groom were nowhere to be seen.

Then the doors opened.
