Once, when we went to an amusement park, Lila said she was upset and wanted the funnel cake she and

Nolan used to share as kids. Nolan left me alone and went to buy it for her.

On our anniversary, Lila said her kitten was sick. Nolan abandoned our plans to go with her to the

veterinarian.

Even when we traveled, Lila would suddenly join us halfway through the trip. Under Nolan’s indulgent gaze,

she would take all his attention and leave me on my own.

I had cried and argued with him, but I could never bring myself to give up our relationship.

Nolan would laugh it off and sweet-talk me until I calmed down, but the next time, nothing ever changed.

His excuse was always the same.

“She’s like a younger sister to me. Just let her have this.”

I had kept giving way until my wedding day, when I was still expected to let Lila and her mother use the celebrity makeup artist my mother had paid a fortune to hire before I did.

Since I no longer needed elaborate bridal makeup, the makeup artist finished in a little over half an hour.

The sky was beginning to pale with dawn.

My male cousins arrived one after another. After offering a few words of comfort, they found places to sit

until they filled the entire living room.

The younger cousins who had been planning a few playful pre-ceremony pranks for the groom now sat

quietly in their seats, their expressions solemn.

Brooke and Hannah flanked me like a pair of bodyguards, ready to go to war for me.

My parents sat where they could face the whole room.

My father looked grim, while my mother smiled and told everyone, “Help yourselves to some coffee. We’ll be

counting on all of you in a little while.”

Her tone was as calm as if she were commenting on the weather.

Ruby wasn’t answering his calls or replying to his texts, and Nolan began to feel uneasy.

Still, he was convinced Ruby was hopelessly in love with him. She was also sensible and always knew when

to put the bigger picture first, so she would never make a scene and ruin her own wedding.

He pushed down his unease and continued preparing to go to Ruby’s house for the first look.

Lila got into the car along the way and said she wanted to come with him.

Nolan hesitated. His instincts warned him that bringing her was a bad idea, but he couldn’t resist her coaxing and agreed out of habit.

When they arrived at Ruby’s parents’ home, white floral wreaths still hung on the doors, and an ivory runner stretched down the front walk.

Yet the house was eerily silent. No one was waiting outside, and nothing about it felt like a wedding morning.

The uneasy feeling in Nolan’s chest grew stronger.

He led the others inside without anyone stopping them. When he reached the living room, he found it packed with people.

Then he saw Ruby standing among them in an ordinary white dress.

He immediately knew something was wrong.

Instinctively, he turned to Ruby, who had always been softhearted, and pleaded with her.

“Ruby, what’s going on? I’m here for the first look. Come with me. Everyone at the venue is waiting for us.”

Lila’s face looked radiant after Susan’s meticulous work. She took a small step forward and spoke in a soft

voice.

“Nolan had Susan do my makeup first. Are you angry, Ruby? Then I’m sorry. But please don’t make a scene

today. Just go with Nolan.”

My cousins looked ready to step forward, but I waved them back and nodded once at my father.

Then I picked up a glass of water, walked toward Lila, and did something no one expected.

I poured the water over her head.

“Are you thinking clearly now?”

“Do you finally understand whose wedding this is?”

Lila’s scream tore through the living room.

Nolan immediately rushed forward to defend her. “Ruby, what the hell are you doing?”

He never got close enough to touch me. My two oldest cousins stepped in and pulled him away, one on each

side.

My father walked over and made a show of straightening Nolan’s suit collar and tie.

“Ruby’s mother and I are still standing right here, yet you dared humiliate my daughter like this on her wedding day, all for Lila, who isn’t even family. How am I supposed to trust you with Ruby?”

One of Nolan’s cousins, who had come with him, realized how badly the situation was escalating and hurried

forward to smooth things over.

“Mr. Bennett, this is all a misunderstanding. It was hard to explain everything clearly over the phone. Today is

Nolan and Ruby’s wedding day, and everyone at the venue is waiting. Can we go there first?”
