Keep Your Millions, Doctor. I’m DONE. Chapter 03

Preston frowned, annoyed. “Jennifer, that old trick again? Don’t you get tired of it?”

“You used pregnancy to blackmail me into sending Wendy away before. If you hadn’t been so jealous, none of this would’ve happened.”

A wave of bitterness washed through me, so deep it made me double over inside.

The miscarriage. The fertility issues. The post-surgical complications.

All those nights of waking up screaming—Preston dismissed them like they were my own fault.

I laughed bitterly and threw his own trauma back in his face.

“I guess I’m just as petty as your mom—can’t stand a mistress moving in.”

“What, you want me to end up like her too? Dead in front of you?”

When Preston was five, his father brought his pregnant mistress home.

That same night, Preston’s mother jumped from their balcony.

Little Preston watched the whole thing. He swore he’d never turn out like his old man.

And now here he was, telling me to play nice with Wendy.

Genetics. What a joke.

Preston’s face went dark as storm clouds.

Jason had enough. He grabbed my arm and yanked me into the storage room.

A cramped, dusty closet stuffed with Preston’s castoffs.

Custom fountain pens. The engagement ring. The silver baby bracelet that had belonged to our lost child.

All the things I’d given him, once his most treasured possessions.

Now they were piled in the dark, collecting dust.

Jason’s voice dripped with contempt.

“Open your eyes. Preston’s thrown your history in the trash. He’s moved on. You’re the only one still stuck in the past.”

Lindsay squeezed in too, letting out a regretful sigh.

“Wendy’s not as bad as you think. She donated a kidney to your mom. Without her, your mom’d still be in the ICU.”

“These past three years, we’ve seen her kindness. What you did back then—it was over the line.”

I froze. My hand instinctively went to the scar on my lower back.

When my mom got sick, I’d gotten tested in secret—against all medical advice.

Thank God I matched.

I never told anyone. I gave her my kidney and hid it from all of them.

Even now, that scar still ached some days, but I’d never regretted it.

Because the woman who’d always had my back—who’d supported me through every crazy stunt—was my mother. Of course I saved her.

But now they were saying Wendy was the donor.

Sour tears welled in my throat.

I forced a smile, but my voice cracked.

“You all regret taking my side now, don’t you?”

“You not only regret it—you and Preston spent three years lying to me.”

My father sighed heavily, worn out.

“Jennifer, watching you suffer hurts us too.”

“If you’re going to live like this forever, isn’t it better to just let go?”

I lifted my head and slowly swept my gaze over every familiar face.

Not one of them felt familiar anymore.

These were the people who’d cried at my wedding, wishing me a lifetime of happiness.

The ones who’d fought for me, pulled me off ledges, dragged me back from the dead.

And now they were all telling me to quit.

I slipped my wedding ring off my finger and set it down beside Preston’s discarded things.

“Fine. I heard you. I’m letting go.”
