The Hairclip He Gave Me Was a Free Gift from Her Jewelry Spree Chapter 13

I was fine.

Too bad about the roses, though.

In the shoving, many of the bright flowers had snapped.

“Sebastian.” I called his name.

His mouth was bleeding from Ethan’s punch, and he wiped it with the back of his hand.

Standing in the shadow of the stairs, I couldn’t see his expression, but I knew his eyes brightened for a

second when I said his name.

“The truth is, I don’t know what I’ve felt for you all these years.”

“But you should know, I used to hate you. Really hate you.”

“I hated you so much that I imagined, over and over at night, that if you ever confessed to me with flowers

again, I would smash them in your face.”

“But when you actually showed up, do you know what I felt?”

His voice trembled.

“What did you feel?”

“Annoyance.”

“The kind of annoyance you feel when someone won’t leave you alone.”

“No flutter. No hatred. Just irritation.”

The light didn’t reach him, but I could feel his face go pale in an instant.

“Sebastian, getting back together requires love.”

“And I don’t hate you. I don’t love you either.”

He swayed and stayed silent.

After a long moment, he looked at me as if he wanted to speak, but a tear seemed to fall.

I didn’t go home. I got into Ethan’s car and went to a nearby park.

At dusk, pigeons flapped up together, sweeping over the neatly trimmed tree canopies.

He took me to a small bar nearby.

In my memory, Ethan had been raised under strict rules, every move measured.

But for some reason, he drank a little too much tonight.

Slightly drunk, he walked with me across the bridge.

“Sorry. I didn’t know Mom and Dad gave him your address.”

“I came too late.”

I shook my head. “No, you didn’t.”

“When I saw him standing in front of you today, I felt an indescribable restlessness and unease.”

“Rhea, there are things I’ve kept buried in my heart for years. I want to…”

I cut him off. “Brother, you’re drunk. I’ll call a cab to take you home.”

In the past, calling him brother worked at moments like this.

But tonight, Ethan turned a little shameless.

His gaze landed on a boat drifting on the river.

“Rhea, calling me brother won’t work now.”

“Listen to me.”

“For

years,

I helped Mom and Dad look for their biological daughter. But when I found out it was you, I couldn’t be happy.”

The night wind rushed past the boats and messed up his hair.

“When I learned you had a boyfriend, I was unhappy too, but at least I had hope.”

“Like a rat that couldn’t stand the light, hoping you would break up soon.”

“But you’re my sister. Even if there’s no blood between us, on paper you’re my sister.”

“Rhea, from that day on, I knew those hidden feelings of mine could never see the light.”

I rarely saw Ethan look so dejected.

His gaze went far away, as if lost in thought.

“How did the girl with the bright eyes who fed cats with me under the teaching building end up being my

sister?”

“Rhea.”

The river wind made our clothes snap, and he looked at me, leaning in slightly.

“Will my feelings ever get to see the light?”
