He Gave Me 99 Surgeries for His First Love, the 100th Killed Me Chapter 07

He called in doctors and nurses.

A group of them took turns-prying, pulling, leveraging-until finally, they forced my stiff fingers open one by

one.

In my open palm lay a small cufflink, stained with dried blood.

Nathaniel froze.

It was the birthday gift I’d given him that morning-the day of the kidnapping.

He’d put it on right away, and that evening, on his way to his birthday dinner, he was taken.

The bloodstains came from struggling in that warehouse.

After he was rescued, he’d looked for that cufflink.

His staff didn’t remember it. Cecilia also said she’d never seen it.

He’d thought it was lost forever.

And yet here it was-in the hand of someone who, according to reports, had been partying at a bar that night.

Nathaniel’s breathing grew shallow.

He looked down at the cufflink, then at my pale face.

A possibility he didn’t want to face surfaced in his mind.

He pulled out his phone and called his assistant.

“Investigate the details of my kidnapping five years ago. Fast-I need results in three days.”

When Cecilia walked into the room, the sun had already set.

The room was pitch black.

She turned on the light and jumped at the silhouette sitting by my bed.

He turned to look at her, and something in his eyes made her heart skip a beat.

She forced a stiff smile. “Nate, why are you still here?”

Instead of answering, he asked, “What are you here for?”

“Just checking if she’s awake.”

“She’s not.”

“Oh,” she laughed nervously. “Then I’ll get going.”

She turned to leave but heard his voice behind her.

“Back when I was kidnapped-was it really you who saved me?”

She stopped and turned back to face him.

“Of course it was me. Why are you asking all of a sudden?” She tilted her head, her tone light. “Don’t you remember? You were so badly hurt-I was crying so hard. But thank God you made it.”

He held her gaze. “Where exactly did you find me?”

The smile on her face faltered for just a second. Then she looked away. “It was so long ago. I don’t

remember.”

“I see.” His voice was flat.

“Yeah,” she pulled her smile back up, switching topics lightly. “Oh, Nate, didn’t you say that after the hundredth surgery is done, you’d take me on a trip to celebrate? Where are we going?”

Something dark flickered in his eyes.

“I own a private island. Beautiful views. We’ll take my helicopter. Leave first thing tomorrow morning.”

She let out a quiet breath of relief, thinking the subject was closed. Her voice brightened.

“Great! Then I’ll go pack. See you in the morning!”

He lowered his head, thumb slowly stroking the cufflink. “I’m not going.”

Her expression faltered. “Why not?”

He looked up, a faint, cold smile on his lips. “I have some business. I’ll join you in three days. I’ll have a surprise for you then.”

She beamed, stepped out lightly, and was gone.

Nathaniel sat there, staring at my face, whispering, “Elena, what do you think-will it be a surprise or a shock in three days?”

I gave no reply.

He brushed his fingers across my face, voice trembling. “Stop being stubborn. Wake up so we can plan the wedding.”

I remained still, my face peaceful in a way that was almost unsettling.

The next day, he woke to find he’d spent the night by my bedside.

There was a text from Cecilia on his phone.

[Nate, I’m heading off. See you on the island.]

He didn’t reply.

He stayed by me for three days. I still didn’t wake up.

He called in a team of specialists to run a full workup.

The doctors looked at the results and fell into a collective silence.

The lead doctor cleared his throat and spoke cautiously.

“Mr. Sterling, after our thorough assessment, Ms. Morrison’s vital signs have completely ceased.”

Nathaniel stared at him. “What does that mean?”

“It means… Ms. Morrison has passed away.”
