He Gave Me 99 Surgeries for His First Love, the 100th Killed Me Chapter 06

The saw finally stopped. The bone flap was pried loose.

My whole body convulsed violently.

Under the unbearable pain, my body no longer felt like my own.

A wave of warmth spread from beneath me.

I could do nothing but feel the dampness slowly expand, soaking through the surgical sheet.

The smell crept into the air.

Cecilia stopped again, turning the camera toward the stain.

“Oh, the patient lost bowel and bladder control. That’s normal when pain peaks-sphincter muscles give out. Just a physiological response.”

Nathaniel raised a hand to block the lens. “Don’t look at that. You keep going-I’ll handle it.”

He changed my pants for me, his movements gentle and practiced.

In those days after the miscarriage, I could barely take care of myself. He’d done this every day without

complaint.

Back then, it had been warm. Now, I only felt cold.

He paused, looked up, and saw my face streaked with tears.

I could barely breathe, let alone speak, but I still squeezed out a whisper.

“I… hate… you…”

His expression faltered, panic flickering in his eyes.

I stopped looking at him, staring instead at the blinding white surgical light above.

I thought I saw him back in senior year, wearing that dazzling white school uniform.

Asking if I wanted to be with him.

Wind scattered the wisteria blossoms, and I said yes, blushing.

If I could go back, I would never say yes.

Cecilia’s commentary continued.

“Now, at last, the crucial step-brain tissue removal.”

My cranial cavity went empty.

A deep, ancient voice echoed in my mind.

[The contract is void. From this moment, everything taken from that body shall decay, one by one.]

The next second, my awareness lifted, and all sensation vanished.

The monitor traced a single straight line.

Nathaniel’s brow jumped. He asked Cecilia, “Why is there no heartbeat?”

She shined a light into my pupils.

“It’s just a pseudo-death state. The new brain will grow back soon.”

He touched my body-it was ice cold.

After a pause, his voice cooled. “Are you sure? This time feels different.”

“Of course it’s different-we took the brain this time,” she said breezily.

“Relax, Nate. I have experience. We did so many surgeries before and they all turned out fine.”

“The brain is more complex, so regrowth will take longer.”

“You can use the time to plan the wedding-surprise her.”

His expression eased. “That’s not a bad idea.”

I was moved to a twenty-four-hour private care room equipped with top-of-the-line life support.

Nathaniel stared at the flat lines on the monitor, and a slow wave of dread washed over him.

He took my hand, voice low. “Elena, you have to wake up. We still have a wedding to plan.”

I floated midair, watching this, and laughed.

Nathaniel, there will be no wedding.

He didn’t know that my regenerative ability came from a fragment of an ancient beast’s soul.

In that car accident, while I was unconscious, I heard its timeless voice.

[I ask you-will you make a contract? Lend your brain to house my remnant soul, and I will keep you from

death and grant you the power to regenerate all organs. If you agree, you must keep this secret.]

I could hear Nathaniel crying beside me, begging me to wake up. I couldn’t bear to see him in pain.

Without thinking, I said yes.

Later, I often suffered debilitating migraines because housing that ancient soul in a mortal brain was too much to bear.

He thought he could just take out the old brain and a new one would grow.

He didn’t know-once the brain was removed, the soul had nowhere to stay. It would leave.

The regenerative power would break.

I would never wake up.

Not only that-every organ previously removed from my body would slowly rot.

I wondered how much longer my kidney inside Cecilia’s body would hold out.

Pulling my thoughts back, I saw Nathaniel staring at my clenched right fist.

Slowly, he reached out, trying to pry it open.

But he couldn’t.

He frowned, tried again, harder, and still failed.

His heart inexplicably racing, he sensed that something important was hidden in my palm.
