You Wanted Space! We’re Done, Dr. Whitmore Chapter 03

Sophie cleared her schedule to stay with me after she found out about the procedure. She swept through the door, grinning.

“Clear out the guest room. Your five-star nanny has arrived!”

I laughed. “Guest room’s already cleaned twice. I even bought new sheets for you—”

I shoved the door open.

The words froze in my throat.

The brand-new bedding I’d laid out was yanked onto the floor.

The guest room was jammed with things I’d never seen before.

A giant teddy bear, half my height, sprawled across the mattress, hogging the whole bed.

The things were a statement. A flag planted on territory that wasn’t hers.

How rich.

Then footsteps drifted in from the front door.

Evelyn sailed in, her laughter bright and careless.

“Dr. Whitmore, thank you for taking me to that restaurant. It was incredible—the dessert made my whole night after that fight with my roommate.”

Adrian’s eyes hit me. His voice was calm, clinical.

“Evelyn had a falling-out with her roommate. She can’t stay in the dorm anymore. She hasn’t found a new place yet, so she’s in the guest room.”

I looked at him. Smiled.

“Adrian. I told you a week ago that Sophie was coming.”

He froze.

The flicker across his face said everything.

Forgotten.

I could still hear his voice from back then, dripping with irritation.

“Figure it out yourself. Not a big deal.”

“Stop asking me about every little thing. So exhausting.”

Now.

Adrian pressed his lips together. His voice lowered.

“Sorry.”

Then he raised the dessert bag in his hand, his tone softening.

Placating.

Like I was a child throwing a tantrum.

“The place we went today. It’s your kind of spot. I’ll take you this weekend.”

My eyes snagged on the logo.

The restaurant I’d practically begged him to take me to. Multiple times.

Busy. No time. Later.

I took the dessert bag from him and dropped it straight into the trash.

Adrian’s face went rigid.

Evelyn stepped toward me, her voice tiny.

“Claire, I’m so sorry. This is all my fault. If it’s inconvenient, I can share a room with your friend. I really don’t mind.”

I looked at her. Then walked. To the guest room.

Grabbed Evelyn’s sheets, her pillow, that absurd bear. Dumped them in the hallway.

Evelyn’s eyes went wide. Then red.

“Claire—those are my things. I need them tonight. What am I supposed to do?”

I glanced toward the master bedroom. Smiled.

“You can share with Adrian.”

“I don’t mind.”

Evelyn’s face flushed scarlet.

“Claire, if you don’t want me here, just tell me. You don’t have to humiliate me like this.”

Her eyes were wet now. She turned and drifted out, looking wounded.

Adrian didn’t follow her.

He just stood there, jaw tight, his frown drilling into me.

“Claire. Evelyn’s careless. A little immature. She didn’t mess up your things on purpose.”

“If you didn’t want her here, you could’ve just said so. I could’ve booked her a room at Grandview.”

“There was no need to come at her twice like that.”

I dropped the smile. Looked him in the eye.

“This is our home.”

“You bring someone else to stay. Shouldn’t you discuss that with me?”

Adrian’s brow pinched.

His expression screamed it. Unreasonable.

“Evelyn’s getting iced out at school. She’s fragile right now. I thought you’d have some empathy.”

“But your first reaction was to nitpick whether I discussed it with you.”

He paused.

“Besides. Two days. Temporary. Was that really worth a whole conversation?”

“Sophie’s coming to stay. You didn’t need to clear that with me.”

The old me.

The old me would’ve texted some guy friend. Invited him over that same night. Just to watch Adrian’s face contort.

But NOW.

I just nodded.

Calm.

“You’re right.”

“It’s not worth discussing.”

If that’s the case.

Leaving this city.

Breaking up with Adrian.

None of it needs discussing.
