He Sent a Fake to Scare Me Off, I Ended Up Feeding Him for Months Chapter 06

I didn’t go looking for Elias that weekend.

I was itching to get behind the wheel, so I found a motorsports club in Westbridge. I hadn’t raced once since arriving in the city.

Unfortunately, the manager stopped me as soon as I reached the entrance.

“Sorry, miss. We’re closed to the public today.”

I pointed at the sign outside. “It says you’re open.”

“That was an oversight on our part.”

Disappointed, I turned away. It hadn’t been easy finding a club with a decent track and experienced drivers.

I grew up riding everything from calves on the farm to motorcycles. Once I discovered racing, Dad sent me abroad to train for several months.

I couldn’t stand being away from home for long, so he eventually brought me back.

When I was fifteen, he’d handed me a large envelope with a suspicious grin.

Inside was the deed to dozens of acres in the hills east of the city.

The land was wide open with natural slopes, exactly the kind of terrain I’d spent six months begging him to buy for a racetrack.

I was about to leave when someone hurried toward me.

A familiar handsome face appeared in front of me.

“It’s you,” he said, sounding pleasantly surprised.

I stared at him for several seconds before remembering that he was the boy I’d nearly run into that night.

“You race?” He smiled, clearly intrigued, as though he’d discovered something rare.

I nodded. “I do, but apparently I won’t be getting on the track today.”

He raised a hand, and the manager who had just turned me away nodded before stepping aside.

“How about a race?” he asked. “I don’t meet many girls who are into this.”

“Consider it a way to make a new friend. After today, you’ll always be welcome here.”

I shrugged, more than happy to accept the challenge.

The moment the light turned green, our cars shot off the starting line almost simultaneously.

From the corner of my eye, I watched him take the first turn with impressive precision.

Instead of following the usual outside-inside-outside line, he cut close to the apex, his rear tires sending a burst of smoke across the track in front of me.

He’d clearly trained professionally, and not just for a few months.

I smiled and cranked the wheel.

Too bad he still wasn’t good enough to beat me.

By the time I took the checkered flag, he was still far behind me.

My phone rang just as I entered the lounge.

“Savannah, some men are trashing Elias’s family’s burger stand. I’m watching it happen right now. Are you coming?”

I obviously couldn’t follow Elias around twenty-four hours a day, so I’d hired someone to keep an eye on him.

I ended the call, changed out of my racing gear, and ran outside before I could say anything to anyone.

By the time Chase reached the lounge, I was already gone.

“Where is she?” he demanded, turning to the manager who had followed him inside.

“She left. Said something came up and rushed out before anyone could stop her.”

Trying to flatter him, the manager said, “Mr. Whitmore, I’ve never seen you hold back like that. You must really like her if you were willing to lose on purpose.”

Chase tossed down his helmet and couldn’t be bothered to answer.

Lose on purpose?

He’d actually lost to a girl, even after giving the race everything he had.

Strangely, he wasn’t angry. A smile tugged at his mouth as he realized he genuinely liked her.

Chase opened his group chat, dropped in a picture, and began typing.

[See? This is fate. I ran into her again today.]

[She’s gorgeous, isn’t she? She looked even better behind the wheel. I’ll bring you guys along next time.]

The replies came quickly. Some praised the picture, while others mocked Chase for falling so hard.

Only Mason remained silent. After staring at the photo for a long time, he finally sent another picture into the chat.

[You’re screwed, Chase.]

[You’ve got to be cursed. The girl you’re into is the country girl you’re engaged to.]

[The new-money girl. Look at our pictures. That’s the same person, isn’t it?]

[As far as I know, she really thinks Elias is you, and she’s been treating him like gold.]

[You’re so screwed. Holy shit.]

Chase sat bolt upright and opened Mason’s picture. He compared the two photos again and again.

After a long silence, he finally typed: [What did you just say?]
