Something tightened in my chest.

Leith noticed me stop and turned around.

“My stomach suddenly hurts,” I muttered. “I’m going to skip dinner.”

He pulled out his phone.

[Something you ate, or your period?]

“Probably my period coming early. You two go ahead. I’ll lie down for a while.”

This time, Tova didn’t argue.

“Go rest. We’ll eat together another day.”

The moment I got back to my room, Madox Keene, a senior I’d helped out the previous semester, texted me.

[Back on campus?]

[You really saved me last semester. Let me buy you dinner.]

I was hungry, so I accepted.

Madox knew I liked spicy food and took me to Bayou Ember for Cajun food.

Only after we finished eating did I notice Leith’s messages.

[Does it still hurt?]

[I bought medicine. I’m outside your dorm.]

[Tova said you aren’t there.]

[Where did you go?]

I stared at the screen.

One minute, he couldn’t stand me.

The next, he was worried about me.

I had no idea what to make of him.

“I’ll walk you back,” Madox said, pulling me out of my thoughts.

I nodded.

Then I replied to Leith.

[Go home. I don’t need anything.]

Madox and I headed back toward campus.

He was easy to talk to and had me laughing most of the way.

Just before we reached Mariston Hall, he suddenly stopped.

“Hold still. You’ve got a bug in your hair.”

Panic shot through me.

I had been terrified of bugs since I was little, so I froze completely.

Madox reached over and plucked it from my hair.

“Gone. You should’ve seen your face.”

I laughed awkwardly.

Then he glanced past me.

“Why is that guy staring at us?”

I followed his gaze.

Leith stood a short distance away.

His face was cold, and his eyes were locked on us.
