The first time I met Leith Halcroft was at a family dinner.

My sister, Elspeth, and I only had each other. After she married Corbett Halcroft, she brought me to live at the Halcroft estate too.

On the drive there, she gave me a warning.

“Corbett has a younger brother named Leith. He can’t speak, he’s two years younger than you, and he’s starting at Hollingridge this fall.”

“He’s exactly your type, but leave him alone. He has a childhood friend he’s really close to.”

I scoffed.

“Relax. I don’t date inside the family circle. Imagine breaking up and still having to see each other at every holiday.”

Then I saw Leith.

So much for that rule.

He wore a white sweater and looked impossibly clean-cut, with delicate features and soft curls that made him look like a puppy begging to be teased.

Elspeth caught me staring and sighed.

At dinner, I sat across from him and kept sneaking glances his way.

Leith noticed. His brows drew together slightly.

That only made me want to mess with him.

Under the table, I hooked my foot around his calf.

His head snapped up, his eyes wide with disbelief.

I gave him my sweetest smile and slowly dragged the toe of my shoe along his leg.

His face went bright red.

He shot to his feet so fast that Corbett looked over.

“Done eating?”

Leith nodded, glared at me, and practically fled the room.

So he had hated me from the very beginning.

He had only put up with me because of Elspeth and Corbett.

But now he had reached his limit.

If I kept pushing him, I wouldn’t be the only one who paid for it.

I’d drag my sister down with me.
