I Had His Daughter: She Had His Name Chapter 05

Grant didn’t make it to the postpartum recovery center until the next morning. In his hand was a tiny gold bracelet he’d had engraved overnight.

On the inside, two words: Luna.

The front desk checked the records and said politely, “Mr. Calloway, we don’t have a reservation

under Ms. Whitfield’s name.”

He rushed back to the hospital.

The bed was empty.

On the nightstand sat a single birth information form.

Mother: Stella Whitfield.

Father: blank.

Beneath the paper was the bank card, returned. On the back, one line in my handwriting:

[Grant Calloway, Luna doesn’t have a father anymore.]

Grant took the form to the birth certificate office.

“I need to add the father’s information.”

The clerk checked the system. “Adding a father after the fact requires the mother’s signature in

person.”

Grant pushed his ID and marriage certificate across the counter.

“I’m her husband. I’m the child’s biological father.”

The clerk looked at him.

“Mr. Calloway, on the night of the child’s birth, you personally requested that the father’s line be

left blank.”

Grant stood there, unable to move.

He remembered the night Luna cried until she was shaking.

The nurse had asked him to confirm the father’s information.

He’d said, “Leave it blank for now.”

Later, the hospital pulled up the security footage.

At12:03 a.m., I was bracing myself against the wall, carrying Luna into the elevator.

At that exact time, his assistant forwarded the video from the Calloway christening dinner.

In the clip, he was holding Colton, standing beside Vivian.

Someone laughed and asked, “Grant, what about that woman at the hospital?”

Grant was quiet for two seconds.

“She can’t leave me.”

“I’ll sweet-talk her a little. She’ll come around.”

At 12:03 a.m., I was burning with fever, carrying his daughter out of the hospital.

At midnight, he was holding another woman’s son, certain I wouldn’t have the nerve to leave.

He preserved the dignity of his christening dinner.

And lost his wife and daughter with his own hands.

A nurse passed by the doorway and said quietly, “Mr. Calloway, when Ms. Whitfield left, she wasn’t even wearing a coat. The baby was crying the whole time.”

The gold bracelet slipped from Grant’s hand and hit the floor.

I wasn’t waiting for him anymore.
