He Gave My Daughter to His Ex, So I Destroyed His Perfect Life Chapter 02

That night, neither my mother nor I slept.

My daughter slept in the small bassinet beside my bed. My mother had wedged a chair against the wheels so no one could move it.

The Whitmore family driver stayed outside the door.

At the other end of the hallway stood the people Ethan had arranged. He thought I didn’t know.

At one in the morning, a nurse pushed a cart into the room.

“Ms. Whitmore, it’s time for the baby’s jaundice screening.”

My mother stood up. “Where’s the equipment?”

The nurse smiled. “The test needs to be done in the newborn nursery. The lighting and temperature there are more suitable.”

I reached out and blocked the bassinet.

“Bring the jaundice meter here.”

“Our usual procedure doesn’t work that way.”

“Then change the procedure.”

The nurse froze.

Ten minutes later, Dr. Lane personally brought the device in. She looked at me, keeping her voice calm.

“Ms. Whitmore, this will affect our efficiency.”

“My child isn’t part of your efficiency.”

She didn’t say anything else.

The test was completed. Everything was normal.

At two-thirty in the morning, Ethan walked in.

He was holding a baby bottle.

“I already asked the hospital’s neonatal nutrition team to prepare some hydrolyzed formula for the baby. You just gave birth, and your body is still recovering. Let her have a little first.”

I looked at him. “Who approved this without my consent?”

His voice lowered.

“Clara, do you really have to talk to me like this?”

I ignored him and stared at the bottle.

There was no safety seal.

The formula label was handwritten.

The stream of comments suddenly appeared before my eyes.

【Don’t touch it. There’s a small amount of sedative inside. The dosage isn’t high enough to seriously harm a baby, but it’s enough to keep her from crying.】

My heart dropped.

“Take it out.”

Ethan’s expression turned cold.

“You think I would drug my own child?”

“Right now, I suspect everyone.”

He placed the bottle on the table. His voice carried the patience he used when he thought someone was being unreasonable.

“Clara, your hormones are all over the place after giving birth. I understand that you’re emotional. But you can’t treat everyone like they’re your enemy.”

My mother spoke up.

“If she doesn’t want it, then she doesn’t use it.”

Ethan looked at her.

“Mom, are you really going to keep enabling her?”

My mother replied calmly. “My daughter just came out of surgery. Whatever she wants to do, I’ll support her.”

Ethan said nothing.

A little after three, another doctor came in with medication.

“Ms. Whitmore, your stress levels are extremely high, and it’s affecting your recovery. Mr. Caldwell asked us to prescribe something to help you relax and sleep. This is a safe dosage and won’t affect breastfeeding.”

I looked at the white pills. “Pull up the medication order. I want to know who approved it.”

The doctor froze.

“I…”

“Pull up the full medication record—the drug name, batch number, prescribing doctor, and medical reason for it. I want everything.”

He hesitated.

“This was a treatment plan specifically requested by Mr. Caldwell.”

I pushed the cup away.

“I’m not taking it.”

Ethan finally lost his patience.

“You refuse to sleep. You refuse the medication. You won’t even let the doctors examine the baby. Are you trying to ruin your own recovery?”

I looked straight at him.

“If I fall asleep, where are you planning to take my daughter?”

A flash of embarrassment crossed his face.

But it quickly turned into a wounded expression.

“Is that really how badly you think of me?”

I nodded.

“You’re worse than I ever imagined.”

He slammed the door and walked out.

The sound woke my daughter.

Her tiny face scrunched up as she started crying.

The pain from my incision made me tremble, but I still picked her up and held her close.

That faint trace of fragrance pressed against my nose.

Breathing it in made me feel safe.

My mother sat beside the bed and slowly stroked my hair.

“Clara, just make it through the night.”

I nodded.

But the stream of comments only showed one sentence.

【They won’t wait until morning.】
