My Husband Had a Child With Someone Else While I Was Carrying His Chapter 09

The ballroom at the Grand Hyatt blazed with light.

A giant screen along the wall scrolled the same line over and over, welcoming their baby into the family.

Lucas moved through the crowd in a sharply tailored suit with a glass of wine in his hand, and Sally stood near the center in a white gown, cradling the child, her smile soft and gracious.

Everyone had gathered around the two of them, and the whole room was thick with compliments.

Then I shoved open the heavy doors, and the noise died all at once.

Every head in the room turned toward me.

The smile dropped off Lucas’s face in an instant, and he came striding over with his brows drawn

tight. “Rachel, what are you doing out here? The doctor told you to stay in bed.”

He lowered his voice, and the reproach in it was open and unhidden. “Do you have any idea what

today is? Don’t make a fool of yourself in front of everyone. Go back, now.”

He reached out to pull me along, and I shook his hand off cold.

Sally walked over with the baby, and her eyes went red on the spot. “Rachel, are you still blaming me? This is my son’s party. I’m begging you, please don’t make a scene.”

Summer pushed her way out of the crowd and jabbed a finger at my face.

“Rachel, have you got no shame at all? You had to come jinx things today of all days?”

“You’re jealous Sally gave him a son and you can’t have one yourself, so now you want to wreck it. That’s it, isn’t it?”

Nicole didn’t waste a breath and called security straight over. “Get this crazy woman out of here before she scares the baby.”

I stood where I was and looked around at every ugly face in the room, and a mocking smile pulled at the corner of my mouth. “Lucas, weren’t you always the one saying I’d lost my mind and tried to hurt your child?”

I pulled a small projector out of my bag and hooked it into the ballroom’s sound system.

“Today I’m going to let everyone see who the crazy one really is.”

I pressed play, and a harsh recording tore through the whole ballroom.

“Quit the act. Nobody’s that delicate. Rachel, Lucas knew hours ago that you were doing badly today. But the second I put a heat patch on the baby, he dropped everything and came running.”

Sally’s voice came first, and then Summer’s, both of them ringing out across the open hall.

The color drained out of Sally’s face, and she clapped a hand over her mouth in terror and stumbled backward. Summer went rigid where she stood, disbelief written all over her.

Lucas stared at the screen, and his pupils shrank to points. “This… what is this?”

Then James stepped up onto the stage with a stack of papers in his hand.

“Everyone, this is the hospital’s system log, and it proves Ms. Bennett’s call line was pulled out by hand that night. This is the record of Summer’s bank transfer to Janet.”

“And there’s more. During the investigation we found that Sally had used a burner account, more than once, to trash the people in Lucas’s circle.”

James pushed his glasses up, and a few screenshots flashed across the screen.

[What a bunch of idiots. A little sweet talk and they bought all of it. Just a pack of dogs, easy to fool.]

Samuel and the others who had been defending Sally a moment ago went ashen in the face.

What filled the ballroom now was a dead, total silence, because every disguise had been ripped away and every lie dragged into the light.

Lucas stood frozen, and the blood in his body seemed to run cold all at once. He looked at Sally like he couldn’t believe it, then turned to me. “Rachel…”

His voice shook, and what he finally understood was exactly the kind of devil he had been protecting all this time.

I only looked back at him, calm. “Lucas, I’m done playing this part.”
