My Fiancé Delayed Our Marriage for His Girl Best Friend, So I Walked Away Chapter 05

His knees buckled and he hit the deck.

Every sound around him vanished.

He scrambled on hands and knees to the railing.

The sea churned below, wave after wave crashing and rolling. The person who had just jumped was already gone.

It had never crossed Gavin’s mind that Samantha would follow her parents’ bodies into the water.

That she would actually throw her life away.

Rebecca saw him falling apart and couldn’t stand it.

She grabbed his wrist.

“Why do you even care? I’ve seen this kind of playing-hard-to-get trick a thousand times.”

“She’s just manipulating your guilt. You spent five years with her to make up for what happened- isn’t that enough?”

Gavin’s breathing was ragged. He didn’t acknowledge her.

His voice came out raw and broken as he ordered his men into the water.

“Get down there and find her. Alive or dead, I want a body!”

Only after watching them dive in did the tension in his shoulders ease a fraction.

He slid down against the railing and sat on the deck, not caring how it looked.

His fingers dug into the fabric of his shirt.

Waves that size. Samantha jumping in. What would happen to her?

He couldn’t let himself think about it.

Rebecca stood off to the side, abandoned, herresentment boiling over.

“Then what are we? You chased my plane in your car to get me back.”

“You killed Samantha’s parents. I came home, and you told me you needed to make it up to her, and then you broke up with me.”

“You promised-three years, and you’d come back to me. But what happened?”

“Year after year, you kept stalling. Gavin, are you in love with her?”

The question made his heart skip.

He shook his head instinctively.

Then stopped.

What he felt for Samantha-it was supposed to be just guilt.

Back then, watching her crumble under the weight of her trauma, the psychological torment eating her alive, he’d made himself a promise. He would stay by her side until she found her way out of the darkness.

And he had. Samantha latched onto him like a lifeline, loved him with everything she had.

Gavin stared at the churning sea.

“I just feel sorry for her…”

He forced a smile at Rebecca, the words tasting like a lie even as he said them.

Samantha would be fine. She could swim.

She was probably already on shore somewhere, waiting for him to come apologize.

And when he found her, he’d say yes-to the license, to the wedding, to making it all up to her.

Even if it wasn’t love, heowed her that much.

The thought steadied him.

But time dragged on, and the search teams came back one by one, exhausted.

No sign of her.

“Boss, we’re not covering enough ground like this.”

Luca was gasping for air, his chest heaving.

“The current’s too strong. If it starts raining, Miss Carter might-”

Everyone could see the truth. Nobody who jumped into water like that was coming back alive.

Gavin’s face was ashen. Rebecca exhaled with relief.

“It’s okay, Gavin. This was Samantha’s choice.”

Gavin turned on her, his lips trembling, but before he could speak

A shout rang out across the water.

“Boss, we found-”

Light flooded back into Gavin’s eyes. He shoved through the crowd.

But it wasn’t Samantha.

It was her parents. Both bodies.

Gavin stood frozen. The spark of hope in his chest was snuffed out instantly.

“Where’s Samantha? She’d stay with them-the bodies are here, so where is she?”
