Every paycheck Elias handed me, I squandered completely the very next day just to

follow the plot.

No savings, no stash. Yet I’d suddenly bought him a two-thousand-dollar coat.

“I fixed a car for an important client today,” Elias lied gently, “he gave me a

two-hundred-dollar tip.”

Elias handed over every cent he earned lately to me.

He never pressed further about where I’d gotten the money, nor did he ask why I was dressed in designer clothes from head to toe.

He just looked at me for a long moment, then slowly turned his gaze away,

“Don’t try to save money. Just come tell me when you run short.”

He paused, then added quietly,

“I’m sorry.”

An apology that came out of nowhere.
