I Was The Wrong Girl In His Bed For Three Years Chapter 03

By the time Graham heard Maren Sterling had come to the office, he was already sitting at the restaurant.

He stopped mid-sentence, stood up, and walked out.

Sloane caught his arm.

“Graham, we already ordered…”

“Start without me.”

He was already gone.

Maren hadn’t brought him lunch in days.

But when he got to the lobby, he saw her handing the lunch bag to some guy.

White shirt. Easy smile. Young, the kind of good-looking that didn’t have to try.

The guy beamed as he took it, then pulled her into a hug.

She didn’t pull away. She smiled back.

Graham stopped a few feet away.

His face didn’t change.

But something behind his eyes went very, very still.

His fists clenched so hard his knuckles turned white.

So that was why she was done with him. She’d found someone else.

Once I stopped chasing Graham, he started coming home early.

Just like the comments predicted.

He’d been coming home late this whole time because he was avoiding me.

My stomach dropped.

I stayed in my room. I couldn’t face him.

That lasted until we had to attend a dinner party we couldn’t skip.

The second we walked into the ballroom, Sloane was already heading toward us.

Long white dress. Barely any makeup. She didn’t need it.

The moment she saw me, her eyes welled up.

“Maren. It’s been so long.”

She looped her arm through mine like we were still roommates.

“When I heard you and Graham got married, I kept wanting to come back and see you.”

“But I was worried seeing me might bring up… things you’d rather forget.”

I had no idea what she was talking about.

But she caught herself, flustered, like she’d said too much.

Her eyes darted to Graham.

“You didn’t tell Maren?”

“Sorry. I just assumed you two wouldn’t keep secrets from each other.”

Sloane bit her lip, then turned to me.

“I was kind of insecure back in college. I didn’t have the nerve to use my own photos.”

“So when I was talking to Graham online, I used your photos instead.”

She squeezed my hand, guilt written all over her face.

“He came to campus with those photos, looking for the girl in them. And he found you.”

“I wanted to tell you the truth.”

“But you were so happy. You told me someone fell in love with you at first sight.”

Her eyes glistened.

“I just couldn’t bring myself to tell you…”

The comments appeared.

[This public humiliation is DELICIOUS. Otherwise, she’d actually go on believing Graham fell for her at first sight.]

[Sloane is literally too kind. This girl stole her man and she’s still worried about hurting her feelings.]

[A fake is a fake. Everything’s about to go back where it belongs.]

A cold chill ran down my spine.

Sloane’s gaze drifted back to Graham, soft and knowing.

“Congratulations. You did end up marrying the girl in the photos.”

Graham’s jaw tightened.

“Sloane.”

“Fine. I’ll stop.”

She gave a small, helpless laugh and took my hand.

“We were just kids back then.”

“Maren, you don’t hold it against me, do you?”

Numbness crept through my body.

Every word out of her mouth sounded like an apology.

But every word was really a reminder that Graham had fallen in love with her.

I just happened to have the right face.

Graham’s brow furrowed.

“That’s enough. Stop.”

That only made it worse.

Of course. He was protecting Sloane.

When we sat down, Sloane ended up right next to Graham.

The moment the food arrived, she reached over and picked the cilantro off his plate without thinking.

“Sorry. Old habit.”

Then she turned to me, like it had just hit her.

“Maren, you knew that too, right?”
