Six Rigged Reviews for Your Assistant? Congrats, You Lost Your Fiancée Chapter 04

Nolan clearly believed every second of it.

He caught Sloane and pulled her against his chest, then glared at me.

“What is wrong with you? Stop cornering her.”

“She’s young and alone in this city. Do you know how hard she has worked to survive?”

“I don’t agree to this breakup. We have been fine for years, so calm down and we’ll talk in a few days.”

He lifted Sloane into his arms and carried her out.

Once again, he had postponed the conversation.

Whenever we had a problem, Nolan promised we would discuss it later.

After a few silent days, he would behave as though nothing had happened.

Because I loved him and wanted a future together, I had always accepted that escape route.

Not anymore.

From my hospital bed, I sent Mrs. Vance a message explaining the breakup.

Soon after I fell asleep, my wound became infected and my fever climbed close to 104°F.

Tessa stayed beside me, handled every emergency, and did not rest until my temperature finally dropped after midnight.

The next morning, she left to buy breakfast.

Nolan arrived and dragged me upright by the arm.

He looked as if I had committed an unforgivable crime.

“I told you nothing happened between Sloane and me. Why are you pretending to break up with me while sending people to threaten her?”

“I know you don’t want to lose me, but this performance has gone too far.”

“You have that St. Christopher pendant, the one blessed at the chapel. Give it to Sloane so she feels safe.

“Consider it your apology.”

He had once driven through a snowstorm to have that pendant blessed for me. Now he wanted Sloane to wear it.

Fine.

After this, nothing would connect us.

Pain spread through my chest as eight years of memories rose at once.

I remembered the winter Nolan gave it to me, his coat soaked from the storm and his hands numb from driving.

He said the pendant would keep me safe whenever he could not be there.

Now he stood beside my hospital bed and took that protection away himself.

I removed the pendant and placed it in his palm with my engagement ring.

From that moment on, Nolan and I had nothing left.

He stared at the two pieces of jewelry before taking only the pendant.

“I’m going to check on Sloane. She’s my assistant, and your threats frightened her.”

“Call me when you’ve come to your senses.”

At the door, he added, “You’re the only woman I ever intended to marry. Anything else was meaningless.”

He claimed he wanted to marry me, yet every year he had rejected my proposal and denied me the award that supposedly stood between us and the wedding.

He had visited me twice without showing real concern.

Years ago, a paper cut on my finger would have sent him searching for a first-aid kit.

Now I had stitches and a dangerous fever, and he only cared about Sloane.

What more proof did I need?

As his footsteps faded, I booked the next available flight to Seattle.

The first thing I would do after leaving the hospital was collect my luggage from the home I had once expected to keep forever. Then I would board that plane.

I arranged the sale from my hospital room and accepted a fair offer without hesitation.

The condo had belonged to my parents, but after years with Nolan, every room carried a memory I no longer wanted to preserve.

At Sloane’s apartment, Nolan loosened his tie and stared at his phone.

My call never came.

He pressed his lips together and started to dial me, but a private message appeared on his screen.

He read one line and went rigid.
