He Gave Her a Million-Dollar House, He Gave Me a 5000 Monthly Allowance Chapter 06

Pierce froze. He clenched his jaw and let out a hollow laugh.

None of your business? What exactly did she mean by that?

He was Nicole’s boyfriend, they were supposed to get married soon. How could any of this be none of her

business?

Pierce stared at the elaborate white wedding veil clutched in his hand, his brows drawing tight. He crumpled

it up and tossed it onto the corner of the sofa.

Melissa looked up and hurried to ask what had happened. Pierce thought it over and told her everything.

Melissa leaned into his chest, wrapping her arms around him gently. “I thought it was something serious. She’s just at the airport, probably heading off on a trip. Nicole always loved traveling, remember?”

Pierce scoffed. “She barely has any savings. She can’t afford a vacation.”

Then he paused.

When Nicole lived in Washington D.C., she used to go on trips regularly. But ever since she’d followed him back to New York, the farthest she’d traveled was the neighboring city.

She’d refused to go anywhere else, saying she wanted to save money for our wedding.

A surge of guilt washed over Pierce.

Still, he reasoned that his work kept him buried; it was only natural he couldn’t travel with her all the time.

“Once we’re married, I’ll take her everywhere. We’ll go on a long, extravagant honeymoon.”

A faint smile tugged at his lips at the thought.

Melissa thought she’d calmed his worries. She pressed a light kiss to his cheek. “Don’t worry. She doesn’t have the money to stay away for long. She’ll come home soon enough.”

Pierce convinced himself she was right and nodded. Yet a quiet unease lingered in the back of his mind.

After dropping Melissa off at their mansion, he returned to the old apartment he and Nicole had once

shared. The silence inside was suffocating.

It used to feel lively when Nicole lived here.

She loved baking small desserts, and every weekend the whole place smelled of fresh pastries

She adored reading, often sitting on the bay window for hours in her spare time. Pierce would watch her from the side, thinking she looked like a living painting.

Nicole would grow shy, either burying her face in her book or charging over to roughhouse with him.

They used to chase each other through every room, laughter echoing off the walls.

A small smile crossed Pierce’s face as he recalled those silly, happy moments.

His phone rang sharply, shattering the quiet.

The smile died on his lips. The kitchen was cold. The bay window was bare. Those warm memories were

ghosts now.

He snatched up his phone, hoping it was Nicole calling. She’d hung up on him earlier, and he’d planned to

confront her. Maybe it was because the signal at the airport was poor, so he could just forgive her.

The screen showed: Delivery Driver.

He answered, met with an impatient voice. “We’ve got a returned package here addressed to Nicole. It’s been sitting at the depot for weeks. Do you want it delivered or discarded?”

“Discard it.”

Pierce hung up, a heavy frustration weighing on his chest.

Why wasn’t it Nicole calling? Why hadn’t she reached out? He kicked a cardboard box on the floor hard.

He stared at the box for a long time before opening it and pulling out its contents.

They were all the gifts he’d given Nicole over the years. She’d left without taking a single one.

“Whatever. I’ll set them aside. She’ll use them when she comes back.”

The next morning was Julian’s first day of school. Melissa sighed repeatedly in the car, worrying incessantly.

Normally he would comfort her patiently, but today he couldn’t summon the energy.

“Pierce, do you think that kick Nicole gave Julian hurt him somehow?”

Something in her tone-too rehearsed, too eager to paint Nicole as dangerous-made his stomach tighten

“The doctor cleared him, Melissa. He’s fine.”

Melissa fell quiet. Even Pierce himself hadn’t noticed how quickly he’d jumped to defend Nicole.

When he heard Melissa’s voice crack with tears, he came back to himself and slowed the car

Remembering Julian was in the backseat, he pulled over to the curb and softened his tone to soothe her “I

haven’t been sleeping well lately. I’m just worn out.”

“But Julian’s our son. Don’t you care about him at all?”

“I know he’s our son, but… how did this even happen?” Pierce’s mind spun into chaos; he barely knew what he

was saying.

He raked a hand roughly through his hair and let out a deep sigh. “Melissa, we always used protection. How

did you end up pregnant all those years ago?”

Doubt, long suppressed, finally surfaced in his eyes. Melissa went rigid beside him, her silence louder than

any denial.
