“That’s horrible. I heard she had severe depression and slit her wrist at home.”

“A house cleaner found her a week later. What a horrible way to die.”

“Stop. That’s terrifying.”

It had been a full week.

She had died the night before they left.

Gavin panicked. He pulled out his phone and frantically sent Evelyn message after message.

There was no response.

He called again and again, but each time, he heard only the same cold automated message.

Just as he was about to break down, his phone rang.

It was an unfamiliar number with a Seabridge area code.

He answered as though he were grabbing the last lifeline left to him.

“Evelyn? Is that you?”

“Hello. Is this Mr. Hale? This is the Seabridge Police Department.”

“Evelyn Brooks was found dead in the bathtub at her home this morning with a fatal self-inflicted wound to

her wrist. Please come to the station as soon as possible to assist with the investigation.”
