The Marcelli Family broke one of Cassian’s legs, and he returned to New York in disgrace.

Then he turned his fury on the Caradonna Family.

He confined Nerina to the house and severed every alliance and business tie with her family.

My father and Alaric came to confront him.

“Cassian, what the hell is going on? Why did you end our partnership?”

“Our alliance has always been solid. If you pull your investment now, the Caradonna Family’s businesses will

be on the brink of a cash-flow crisis.”

My father looked haggard, as though he had aged ten years overnight.

“And what about Nerina? Why haven’t we been able to reach her? Cassian, what happened?”

Cassian gave a humorless laugh, each word twisted with rage.

“This is only the beginning. The Caradonna empire will go bankrupt. Your debts will bury you, and then you’ll

end up behind bars.”

“Have you lost your mind, Cassian?”

Alaric could no longer contain his fury. He punched Cassian across the face.

“Did you find another woman and decide to destroy the Caradonna Family for her?”

“Both my sisters married you. Wasn’t that enough? What the hell do you want?”

Cassian wiped the blood from the corner of his mouth, a chilling smile spreading across his face.

“What do I want? I want Evelina back.”

His eyes reddened as he roared at them.

“If all of you hadn’t driven Evelina past her breaking point, why would she have left?”

“I treated you well because Evelina cared about you. Now she hates you, so I’m going to wipe you out for

her.”

“If you hadn’t put Nerina in my bed, my marriage to Evelina would never have fallen apart.”

“You and Nerina-all of you are going to pay.”

Alaric seized him by the collar and spoke through clenched teeth.

“You were the one who wanted Nerina first, you bastard.”

The men erupted into a brawl that lasted until the police arrived.

Within days, the Caradonna Family filed for bankruptcy. My father could not bear the blow and jumped from the Caradonna headquarters.

Alaric later confronted Cassian again. During the fight, they shot each other, and both men died.

By the time anyone found Nerina, Cassian had kept her locked in the basement for nearly a month. She had completely lost her mind.

I learned all of that later.

Once Cassian was no longer a problem, I flew to Switzerland alone.

At the foot of the Alps, the lake shone clear and green as an emerald. The mountain wind swept through my hair, carrying away all the noise of the world.

Someone had once promised to see the world with me. I thought he was what mattered.

Only later did I realize that what I had truly longed for was the vast world itself.

A voice came from behind me.

“Ms. Marenno, what a coincidence. We meet again.”

I turned around just as the mountain wind rose once more. Ronan’s trench coat snapped in the wind, and a

smile softened his striking features as he walked slowly toward me.
