On the day college applications officially opened, Soph came to my house.

She tried to grab my hand the second she walked in, but I stepped aside.

“Lila, I heard you and Ethan had a fight…” Soph bit her lip, looking all innocent and careful.

“Ethan’s been drinking himself sick at home and won’t even fill out his application. What happened? Was it because I went on the trip and made you mad?”

Watching her fake green tea act, I laughed coldly inside.

She probably still didn’t know I’d been to the motel. That coward Ethan clearly hadn’t told her the truth. He just said we were fighting.

“It’s nothing. I just got tired of it.” I sat down at my computer desk, keeping my tone flat. “What do you want?”

Soph’s eyes flashed with something dark when she saw my cold attitude, but she quickly put on her best-friend mask again.

“Today’s the last day to submit applications. I did terribly, so that local college is the only one I can get into.” She leaned in close, casually glancing at my screen.

“Lila, did you check your scores? You left your last section blank, so yours should be about the same as mine, right? Let’s submit together and pick the same major.”

She reached for my mouse. “I’ll log in for you. What’s your exam registration number?”

“No need.” I stopped her hand and smiled slightly. “I’m a little thirsty, Soph. Could you get me a glass of water from the kitchen?”

Soph paused, then nodded obediently. “Sure, wait a second.”

The moment her back disappeared into the kitchen, I logged into the application system. In the first choice slot, I typed “MIT” without hesitation and hit submit.

When Soph came back with the water, I deliberately opened the webpage for the local state college, pretending to browse.

“Lila, did you decide on this school?” Soph’s eyes lit up. She tried to hide her smile.

“Yeah.” I took the glass and sipped. “I did promise we’d stay together forever.”

Soph let out a long breath of relief. Triumph practically poured out of her.

She probably thought that even if I had good grades, staying at that crappy state school would trap me in the mud with her forever.

And she could keep enjoying everything I provided while secretly sleeping with Ethan, getting off on stealing from the “perfect” girl.

“That’s awesome, Lila!” Soph hugged me tightly. “I knew you cared about our friendship the most! I’ll go tell Ethan right now. He’ll be thrilled!”

“Go ahead.” I patted her back gently. “Wish you two a bright future.”

Soph grabbed her bag and left happily.

I watched her go, then quietly closed the state college page.

Idiots.

When the admission results came out, the entire city’s high school circle exploded.

Brookhaven High had a student ranked third in the state for STEM who got into MIT’s elite program. Banners went up all the way to our neighborhood.

When Ethan and Soph saw the news — the girl smiling brightly on camera holding her MIT acceptance letter was me — they completely lost it.
