The chapel was located in upstate, near a town where he had filmed several projects. He knew the area well.

He slipped out at dawn. When I woke, I found the small carved wooden box he had once given me sitting on the nightstand.

I opened it to find a simple silver band and a woven leather bracelet.

There were no diamonds, just our initials engraved on the inside of the ring.

The leather bracelet was delicately braided, holding a tiny, polished silver ring.

I pushed myself up and slipped the ring onto my ring finger. It was a little loose, but it fit.

When I found him in the chapel, he was just standing up from the stone altar rail, his knees covered in dust.

A priest murmured a quiet blessing, and Julian bowed his head before turning to walk toward me.

“Where did you go—”

“I got you this.” He raised his wrist, showing a matching woven band. “The priest blessed it. For protection.”

I stared at the dust on his knees. “How long were you kneeling there?”

“Not long.”

“Julian.”

He looked down, offering a faint smile. “Just the night. There are a lot of stone steps out there—one hundred and eight, actually. I prayed on my knees at every single one. Finished right before dawn.”

I turned my head away, but the tears spilled over anyway.

Back in high school, girls used to try and give him religious matching bracelets.

He had always rejected them with a cool, detached smile: *Sorry, I don’t really believe in that stuff.*

Yet here he was, having spent the entire night bruising his knees on cold stone just to get me a blessed bracelet.

“I thought you didn’t believe in God.”

He pulled me into his chest, resting his chin on my head.

“For you, Hazel, things are different.”

The priest passed by us, nodding quietly. Julian returned the gesture.

I stood beside him in the dim, candle-lit sanctuary, silently begging whatever deity was listening to give me just a few more years.
