My Deskmate A Movie King Faked Cancer For Cash Chapter 16

Lately, my hospital visits had become more frequent.

My hair was falling out in clumps, I was taking more pills, and I slept constantly.

Eventually, Julian noticed.

He wrapped up work early one day, coming home to find me hunched over the toilet, throwing up.

The door flew open, and the drink in his hand slipped, splashing all over the floor.

He knelt down to support me. “Hazel?”

I wiped my mouth and forced a smile. “Just food poisoning.”

Without a word, he carried me back to bed and immediately dumped out my bag.

I struggled to stop him, but I was too weak.

His hands shook as he pulled out the prescription bottle.

He popped the cap, stared at the pills, and then read the warning label, freezing completely.

I watched his back from the bed and called out softly, “Julian.”

He didn’t turn around.

“Julian, look at me.”

He turned slowly, his eyes bloodshot. He squeezed the bottle so hard.

—

his knuckles turned white. “What is this?”

“Just stomach medicine.”

“Liar.”

He walked over, sat on the edge of the bed, and snatched up my phone.

I watched him open my gallery and find the screenshot of my diagnosis.

His thumb hovered over the screen, completely motionless for a long time.

“Hazel,” his voice trembled. “Tell me this is a joke. Please.”

I looked away.

“Julian, I’m sorry.”

Six months ago, I was diagnosed with late-stage stomach cancer.

Terminal.

I had asked the doctor how much time I had left.

He said two years, if I was lucky.

Now, I only had a year and a half.

Julian set the phone down and pulled me tightly into his arms.

His shoulders shook violently.

“When?”

—

“Before we ran into each other again.”

“So that day at the hospital…”

“A follow-up.”

He held me tighter, his voice breaking. “Why didn’t you tell me?”

Outside, the snow was falling. The radiator hummed softly in the room, and his tears soaked into my hair.

I stared at his tensed, veiny hands, but my own tears refused to fall.

“Julian, I was scared.”
