The day Eleanor came to find me, I was just stepping out of the hospital.

She didn’t beat around the bush.

“Hazel, I own this hospital.”

I stared at her, my palms breaking into a cold sweat as my mind went completely blank.

Julian had never told me which hospital his mother owned.

My last checkup report had been issued by this exact facility, stating in cold, hard print: late-stage stomach cancer, clear signs of metastasis.

“Does Julian know?” she asked.

I shook my head, taking a long moment before I could force the words out. “Eleanor, I’m sorry… I know I’m not good for him.”

My voice began to tremble, and I clenched my fists tightly at my sides. “I’ll leave him.”

Eleanor sighed, reaching out to squeeze my hand.

“Silly girl, I’m just worried about you.”

I looked up at her.

She smiled, the fine lines around her eyes crinkling.

“I knew that boy was crazy about you back in high school.”

“But some things are better put out in the open. It’s for the good of both of you.”

“I was the one who had the doctor fast-track your report last time. In your condition, you need to be hospitalized as soon as possible.”

I nodded. “I know.”

She handed me a business card. “This is my private number. If you need anything, call me anytime.”

I took the card, my fingertips icy.

After leaving the coffee shop, I stood by the sidewalk, letting the biting wind whip against me for a long time before texting Piper.

I attached a photo of my medical report.

Piper sent a voice memo back immediately.

“Hazel, today isn’t April Fool’s. Stop messing around.”

After a long silence, another voice memo came through, her voice cracking with tears.
