Police officers and firefighters poured out of the elevator in full gear.

“Drop it! Don’t move!”

The lead officer barked the command while two firefighters swung a hose into position and trained it directly

on Chloe.

Chloe froze.

She turned, slow and dazed, thumb still on the lighter. Then the blast from the hose ripped it clean out of her

hand.

Two officers were on her before she could blink, pinning her facedown on the wet floor.

Gasoline and water swirled across the tile. It was over.

The hallway was wrecked.

Mrs. Foster flung her door open, sobbing, thanking the officers over and over.

I exhaled, taking the first full breath I’d taken in minutes, and opened the door.

The scene outside was chaos.

Chloe was on the ground in handcuffs, soaking wet, mascara streaked down her face.

She saw me step out and her eyes locked onto mine. Pure hatred. Not a shred of regret.

“This is all because of you, Vivian! You did this to me! I hope you rot!”

I stood over her.

“Did you really think everyone owed you something, Chloe?”

I crouched down to her level.

“Winston cut you off, not me. I just sent him the footage of you playing half the husbands in this building at

the same time. He made his own decision.”

Her eyes went wide. The color drained from her face, shattering what little composure she had left.

“You live off men and you get your kicks by tearing other women down. That’s all you’ve ever been.”

I stood up and brushed off my clothes. “Your mistake was picking a fight with me. I don’t argue with women like you. I just finish it.”

The officers hauled her up before she could say another word and walked her into the elevator.

The sirens faded. And just like that, the whole ugly circus was over.
