I was halfway to the door when I heard her. Chloe. Screaming.

“Vivian! Get out here! You vindictive bitch. You ruined my life! Who the hell do you think you are, getting my

money cut off?”

Nathaniel was in front of me in a second, the baseball bat from the entryway already in his hand.

I waved him off and pulled up the doorbell camera feed on my phone.

The woman on the screen looked nothing like the soft, helpless Chloe the building knew.

Her hair was tangled, her clothes wrinkled, as she kicked at our door over and over. And in her hand was a

black plastic bucket.

She popped the lid off between kicks.

A sharp chemical smell seeped through the crack under the door.

Gasoline.

Nathaniel lunged for the door handle.

“Don’t!” I grabbed his arm and pulled him back.

“She’s pouring gasoline!” Nathaniel’s voice cracked.

“I know.”

I was already dialing 911. I requested fire and police, gave the address, described the situation, and hung up.

Then I looked at Nathaniel.

“We can’t open that door. The second we do, the airflow gives the fire a path straight inside. And she’s out of

her mind right now. If you go out there, you’re a target.”

“Vivian! You had so much to say last night. What’s the matter? Come out and say it to my face!”

She was beyond reason now, sloshing gasoline across the door and walls. “You took everything from me!

Winston cut me off, the landlord’s throwing me out. I’ve got nothing left! So if I’m going down, you’re coming

with me!”

The hallway reeked of gasoline.

Across the hall, Mrs. Foster must have looked through her own peephole, because a scream tore out of her

apartment, raw and terrified, begging for help.

I kept my eyes on the screen.

Chloe had a lighter now. Her thumb was on the wheel.

“Nathaniel. Bathroom. Soak every towel we have and stuff them under the door.”

I didn’t look up from the screen.

The elevator chimed.
