The Single Mom Who Toyed With Married Men Chapter 08

The Single Mom Who Toyed With Married Men Chapter 08

The hallway turned on a dime.

Women who’d been hanging back suddenly had plenty to say. They grabbed their husbands by the arm, by

the collar, demanding answers.

Mitchell tried to disappear into the crowd. Brenda caught him by the collar and wanted to know exactly how many times he’d been over to fix that woman’s plumbing.

Chloe stood alone in the middle of it all.

Even Leo had run. He was crouched behind the fire extinguisher cabinet at the far end of the hall, hands over

his ears.

Mr. Davis, stuck between two arguing couples, shouted over the noise.

“Everybody, quiet! I’ve already called 911. The police are on the way!”

Harrison went white. “The police? Why? We didn’t do anything!”

“You damaged private property. That’s what you did.”

I pointed at the wrecked door, keeping my voice perfectly even. “That door was custom-installed last month. Replacement plus damages comes to about thirty thousand dollars.”

I looked from Harrison to Mitchell and back. “Since you both helped smash it, I’m sure the police can help us

work out who owes what.”

Harrison spun toward Chloe, livid. “This is YOUR fault! You set this whole thing up. YOU’RE paying for that

door!”

Chloe backed away, hands up. “I never told you to break anything! You did that on your own. That’s not on

me!”

She grabbed Leo from behind the fire extinguisher cabinet and bolted for 603. The door slammed behind

them.

The deadbolt clicked into place.

The same men who’d been ready to break down our door for her were now standing in the hallway with

nowhere to go. The police on the way. Thirty thousand dollars in damages. Their wives right next to them.

I didn’t give them a second look. I turned and walked inside.

Nathaniel followed, pulling the battered door shut behind us.

The hallway noise dropped to a muffled hum the second the door closed.

“Thirty thousand?” Nathaniel went to the kitchen and came back with a glass of water, a grin tugging at the

corner of his mouth. “Pretty sure we paid twelve for that door.”

“Pain and suffering. Plus my research hours.” I took a sip. “Thirty thousand is the friends-and-family

discount.”
