By that afternoon, the nurses’ station was buzzing.

“They caught the guy. He was hiding out a few blocks away.”

“He said he broke in to rob the place. The wife walked in on him. He pulled a knife and told her to stay quiet. Then the stove got knocked over in the struggle and the fire started.”

“And the whole time, she’s on the phone begging for help, and her husband already told dispatch to ignore her.”

“Her husband’s a fire captain, right?”

“Yep. The department’s already got people down at the station.”

I leaned back against the pillows and said nothing.

Lenore came by that evening with a file.

“Found it.” She dropped the papers into my lap. “Your husband didn’t just not believe you.”

I opened the folder.

The first page was a recovered department group chat log.

8:05 p.m. Dominic: [Heads up, my wife might pull something tonight. Whatever call comes in

from her, sit on it first. Don’t roll trucks right away.]

8:06 p.m. Dominic: [If she says there’s a fire, or she’s hurt, verify before you act. Don’t let her string you along.]

8:07 p.m. Dominic: [She’s a pro at this. Do not engage tonight.]

I turned the page.

The second document was the CAD system flag notes. Filed by: Millbrook Fire Department,

Vance shift.

Note: [Subject’s family member is emotionally unstable. Possible malicious 911 abuse.]

Lenore sat on the edge of my bed, her voice flat and cold. “Dispatch didn’t hang up on you because of one operator’s mistake. They were following his orders. And 911 didn’t hesitate because of a coincidence. The flag was right there in the system.”

She paused.

“Willa, he didn’t misunderstand you. He put his hands around your only way out and squeezed until it closed.”

I shut the file and set it aside.

“Keep digging.”

Lenore studied me. “You know once this goes up, it’s not just divorce anymore, right?”

“He cares more about that uniform than anything else.” I met her eyes. “So let’s take it off

him.”
