I stepped out of the headquarters compound, squinting against the bright sunlight.

The hundred bucks in my checking account was literally all I owned.

I returned to my dinky studio apartment, cooked myself a bowl of quick pasta, and dropped in an egg.

I picked it up.

back at the headquarters?”

“Sure.”

I hung up and went back to my pasta.

The next afternoon, I returned to the Metropolitan Defense Command.

This time, the guards didn’t stop me. Someone brought me straight up.

When I reached the office door, I noticed an extra person inside.

A middle-aged woman in a dark grey suit, appearing to be in her late fifties. She was impeccably groomed,

with eyes like ice.

She sat on the couch opposite Grant, sipping tea.

The moment I walked in, her gaze swept over me like a scalpel, scanning from head to toe and back up

again.

She was trouble.

Mrs. Evelyn Vance has entered the chat! She thinks Josie Miller is a professional scammer and prepared five different contingencies to handle her.

I stayed silent.

Five contingencies?

For me?

I literally just came to collect twenty-eight hundred dollars.

Grant sat behind his desk, looking even colder than yesterday.

He glanced at me.

“Sit.”

I took a seat.

Mrs. Vance set down her teacup with refined grace.

“So, you’re Josie Miller?”

I nodded.

She let out a faint, superficial smile.

“Yeah. Grant Vance from Metropolitan Defense Command. Sole heir of the Vance family.”

Her smile froze for a split second.
