The doubt in Ethan’s eyes quickly disappeared.

He walked up to the cage and reached through the bars to grip my chin.

“Nora couldn’t stand pain. She was timid. She couldn’t even bring herself to kill a fish.”

“She could never become this.”

I stared at him.

I had never wanted to become this either.

Ethan brushed the frost from my face with his thumb.

The gesture was so familiar that, for one fleeting second, I thought he might say my name the way he used

Instead, he said, “Stop using her memories to deceive me.”

An announcement sounded over the checkpoint speakers.

[Captain Mercer, proceed to the climate-controlled district with your registered dependent, Sophie Reed.]

Sophie’s wrist unit lit up at the same time. There was no personal identification number on the screen, only a

line of gray text:

[Rescue Corps Medical Dependent]

A flash of humiliation crossed her eyes as she stared at the words. She quickly pulled her sleeve over the

display.

The gates opened, spilling warm light over them.

A staff member stopped the cage.

“Unregistered infected are not allowed inside.”

Ethan produced the transfer authorization for the subzero containment facility.

“Take it to Cold Storage Seven.”

The staff member frowned.

“Cold Storage Seven can only stay operational for three days. What happens after that?”

Ethan looked at me.

“I’ll find a way.”

I pounded desperately on the bars.

He had once promised that no matter what happened, he would always bring me home.

Now home was right there, on the other side of the wall.

So was my husband.

But his registered dependent slot bore another woman’s name.

Sophie slipped her arm through Ethan’s.

“Come on. They’re waiting for you to lead the briefing.”

The gates slowly closed.

Before the last sliver of light disappeared, I heard Sophie ask, “She can’t get in, right?”

Ethan was silent for two seconds.

“Right.”

“You don’t have to worry.”

Cold Storage Seven lost power on the second day and caught fire on the third.

Scalding steam flooded the iron cage. I watched the frozen flesh on my arms melt away, exposing blackened

bone.

A massive frost-dead smashed through the cage door and lunged at a little girl huddled in the corner.

She was only six or seven. Ice covered her body too, but she was still conscious.

She raised her frost-cracked hands to shield her head.

I grabbed a broken length of metal pipe and drove it through the back of the frost-dead’s neck.

An alarm erupted.

Haven’s security team burst through the door, with Ethan leading the way.

He saw the frost-dead lying at my feet. He also saw the pipe in my hand.

Sophie followed behind him, her voice trembling.

“It’s evolving.”

“It knows how to use weapons now.”

I dropped the pipe and pointed at the little girl behind me.

I had done it to save her.

Ethan raised his rifle.

“Get down.”

I did not move.

“Last warning. Get down.”
