we’ll be in the same city.”

His voice was muffled against my shoulder. “Yeah. I’m going to your city.”

I smiled. “And if you’re really sad, I could actually be your…”

Orion pulled back slightly. He looked down at me. His eyes were full of something unguarded and intense.

I shut my eyes. Steeled my heart. Gritted my teeth.

“I could be your mom.”

Orion froze.

Then he laughed. Shoulders shaking. Full, real laughter.

I pouted. Was it that funny? They say a kid without a mom is like grass without roots. If I had to be his mom

figure, fine. I’d do it.

He laughed for a while. Then his laughter faded. He said my name, seriously. “Linnea Finch.”

“Yeah?”

“You said you’d grant me a wish. I want to tell you what it is now.”

He took off his glasses. His beautiful eyes gazed into mine. Amber pupils. Like they had gravity. I couldn’t look away.

“My wish. The secret I’ve kept buried the whole time.”

He said it with absolute gravity.
