He Called at 3 AM to Move the Car, I Called 911 to Move the Body Chapter 07

When I got back to the precinct, Brian was slamming the table in the interrogation room.

“I’m sad my brother’s dead too! But why are you treating me like a murderer? I owe money, sure, but we’re

brothers. I wouldn’t kill him!”

Detective Vance printed the drive contents and threw them in front of him.

“6.8 million. Overseas gambling debts. Collection notices. Forged contracts. A request to delete Unit 7 surveillance. Do you want me to keep going?”

Brian’s bravado crumbled piece by piece.

He gritted his teeth. “I admit the money. But I didn’t touch him.”

Detective Vance slid the forklift report across the table.

“Your fingerprints are on the forklift. Your footprints are on the Unit 7 floor. Ethan’s smartwatch cloud data shows his heart rate dropped sharply at 1:22 AM. You were in Unit 7 at that time.”

Brian’s head snapped up. “He was already down when I got there!”

Detective Vance’s eyes turned icy. “Then who made him collapse?”

Brian shut his mouth.

In the next room, Wendy was still crying.

“I was just helping Ethan with a video project. He wanted to try AI marketing. I don’t understand why you’re

connecting this to a murder case.”

The female officer put their chat log in front of her.

[Brian: Call her down at 3 AM.]

[Wendy: Will she be scared?]

[Brian: Scared is easier to control.]

[Wendy: Is Ethan taken care of?]

[Brian: Mom’s on it.]

Wendy’s crying stopped cold. She stared at the screen, her lips white.

“I didn’t send that.”

The officer said flatly: “The phone was found in your bag. Both the fingerprint and facial-recognition

unlock records match you

Wendy started shaking.

“Brian forced me to do it!He said he’d make me VP of NorthRiver if helped him. He said Nora would be gone

soon and I could take over the executive office!”

I sat behind the one-way glass, my stomach churning.

Wendy’s crush on Ethan was obvious to the whole company. She’d bring me coffee when I visited, dropping

comments about how Ethan hadn’t eaten breakfast. She’d send work messages late at night with a casual

“You’ve been working hard, Ethan.”

Ethan always showed me the messages. He said, “Little Branch, I’ll handle it.”

Later, he moved her off core projects. I thought she’d back off. Instead, she latched onto Brian.

She wanted power. She wanted money. She wanted to climb over my corpse.

In the other room, Susan had cried her voice raw. She kept repeating: “Brian was always sickly. Ethan was the older brother-it’s his job to help. He had so much money. What’s wrong with giving some to Brian? He

insisted on calling the police. He insisted on destroying his own brother.”

Detective Vance played a clip of Brian’s confession. In it, Brian was already half broken.

“The idea was Mom’s. She said we should keep my brother calm first. She said Nora was timid-if we

dragged her into it, she’d give up her shares to save herself. I just wanted money to pay my debts.”

Susan froze. Her crying stopped.

After a long moment, she lunged at the table.

“He’s lying! Who was I doing this for? I’m old-do you think I did this for myself? Brian, you ungrateful

brat!”

Detective Vance’s voice stayed cold. “So you admit you were involved?”

Susan froze. Her eyes darted.

He opened the coroner’s preliminary report.

“After Ethan died, you helped clean the scene and moved the body. Your slipper prints are on the floor

outside Unit 7. Your car trunk tested positive for blood. If you talk now, it’ll go easier on you.”

Susan covered her face and finally broke down.

“I didn’t want Ethan to die! When Brian picked up the knife, I froze. I wanted to call an ambulance. But Brian said if he went to prison, it was over. I only have two sons. I couldn’t lose another one.”

When I heard that, my chest felt like it was being torn apart.

She said she couldn’t lose another one. But Ethan was already lying cold in the coroner’s office.

In her heart, the dead one was already out. The living one was the only one worth saving.

I stood up. Detective Vance glanced at me through the glass.

I said, “Can I see Brian for a minute?”

He frowned. “You can’t have private contact with a suspect.”

“I’ll just say one thing at the door.”

He considered it, then nodded.

When Brian was brought out, there was panic in his eyes. The moment he saw me, he started cursing.

“Nora Hayes, Happy now? The Brooks family is finished-and don’t think you’re getting away with this

either!”

I pulled out my phone and showed him the freeze notice I’d just received.

“All NorthRiver accounts are temporarily frozen. That river-view apartment under your name–the

purchase funds are linked to stolen money. It’ll be seized too. Not a single cent of your gambling debt will

come out of Ethan’s company.”

The last bit of color drained from Brian’s face.

I looked at him. “You killed him for money. Not a single cent of your gambling debt will come out of Ethan’s

company.”
