Lost My Love to His Best Friend Chapter 01

Lost My Love to His Best Friend Chapter 01

We were playing truth or dare when Kieran’s girl best friend grinned and spoke up out of nowhere.

“I’m three months pregnant with Kieran’s kid.”

My whole body went rigid on the spot.

Kieran met my stare and tossed out a lazy, dismissive smile.

“Riley lives a childfree single lifestyle, but she still wanted a baby. We’re basically ride-or-die best pals, I had to help her out.”

“Don’t overthink it. It was one single night. Everyone knows Riley and I are strictly platonic.”

Riley elbowed his chest hard.

“You’ve got some nerve bringing that up. That night hurt like hell—you acted like you’d never gotten laid a day in your life.”

“Thank god we knocked it out on the first shot, otherwise I’d have to go through that awful mess all over again.”

Kieran laughed and laced his fingers through hers, then twisted back to face me.

“We’re picking up our marriage license next week on your birthday. Once the kid’s here, you’ll be its mom too.”

He sounded dead certain I’d never walk away.

He had his girl best friend, but I had my own boy best friend too.

I pulled out my phone and fired off a text.

Wren: [That old promise you made—you’d marry me if I was still single by twenty-eight? Does it still hold?]

The table erupted in loud teasing cheers seconds later.

“Holy hell, you two hid this so well you’ve already got a baby on the way!”

“My wife spotted you two at the OB/GYN clinic last month. I didn’t believe her back then, but it’s all real!”

“Riley never actually wanted a childfree single lifestyle—she’s just waited ages for you to pop the question. Now there’s a kid on the way, you two need to tie the knot ASAP!”

Their taunts grew louder, none of them sparing a single glance my way.

Kieran’s crew never liked me much anyway.

When Riley first showed up, his friends teased them nonstop right in front of me.

Kieran flipped the whole table back then.

“Wren’s the one I’m spending my whole life with. Keep yapping, and we’re no longer brothers.”

Now he just sat there, smiling and saying nothing.

My nails dug sharp into my palm.

Kieran finally noticed how pale I’d gone.

He wrapped an arm tight around my waist and murmured in a placating tone.

“Wren, don’t pay any mind to their stupid jokes. You’re the only one I love, and we’re getting the marriage license next week anyway.”

Riley shrugged like it was no big deal.

“Girl, I only hit up Kieran ‘cause I figured his sperm quality was solid. If I’d known his game was that bad, I would’ve found someone else.”

Kieran’s face darkened instantly.

He yanked Riley straight into his chest.

“You were a virgin before I took care of that for you—count your blessings. You whined and cried the whole night through, who else would’ve put up with you?”

Riley didn’t back down, sliding a hand down to grab him roughly.

“Funny coming from you—you finished in ten minutes flat that night, then begged me for round after round.”

They tussled right there, shoving and grabbing at each other like no one else existed.

Something clamped hard around my heart, squeezing it tight.

I could still picture twenty-year-old Kieran, bright-eyed, swearing he’d only ever love me.

I never imagined eight years of us could turn this ugly.

I slammed my wine glass down hard against the table with a sharp bang.

Kieran snapped out of it, shoving Riley off his lap—her shirt half unbuttoned from their tussle.

He reached out to grab my hand.

I pulled away before he could touch me, staring straight into his eyes.

“The hotel’s upstairs. Want me to book you two a room?”

Kieran’s gaze turned cold.

“Wren Penn, Riley and I are just best friends. Quit the sarcastic attitude.”

I let out a bitter, mocking laugh.

“So sleeping with your best friend means I’m the one being snarky?”

Riley stepped between us, pretending to play peacemaker.

“Wren, if the baby’s bugging you that bad, I’ll just get an abortion in a couple days, okay?”

Panic drained all color from Kieran’s face.

“Don’t even say that. Abortions mess up your body, and that’s my kid—I won’t let you do that.”

A sour, bitter taste burned up my throat.

Last year I’d gotten pregnant accidentally, and I thought Kieran would be just as thrilled as I was.

Instead he frowned at me.

“Wren, you know I don’t want kids. I only need you.”

After he begged me over and over, I cried my way through getting rid of that fully developed baby.

The truth hit me plain then. He didn’t hate kids—he just hated the ones I carried.

“Wren, you’re gonna raise this baby alongside me. Can you stop blowing up over nothing now?”

I locked eyes with his annoyed glare, and every ounce of fight vanished from me instantly.

I snatched up my purse, my face stone cold as I sized him up.

“Kieran. We’re done.”
