One in the morning, Sadie came into my room.

She carried a mug of warm milk and leaned against the wardrobe, watching me fold clothes with a sly grin on her face.

“Edmund’s pretty romantic, huh?”

“The Arctic. Northern lights. So dreamy. Isn’t that what you’ve always wanted, Rowena?”

I folded the last shirt. She looked away quickly, pretending to study her nails, her tone playful.

“Take some photos back with you, so I can live vicariously through you. I want to see what those lights actually look like.”

The study door opened. Footsteps echoed down the hallway.

Edmund must’ve wrapped up his meeting. He appeared at my bedroom door, leaning against the frame, watching me pack my suitcase.

Sadie straightened up from the wardrobe, pressed the milk into my hand, and headed for the door.

As she passed Edmund, he reached out and tugged her sleeve, just a light pull.

“Sadie, why don’t you come with us? To see the lights,” he said.

“Rowena won’t mind.”

His tone was casual, like he was making an innocent joke.

A smile even tugged at his lips. But his eyes never left her profile, waiting for her answer.

Sadie froze for half a second.

Then she pulled her hand back, turned around, and rolled her eyes at him with a laugh.

“What are you saying?”

“Who brings their sister-in-law on a honeymoon? Are you out of your mind?”

Edmund’s smile died at the corners of his mouth.

Slowly, he let go of her sleeve, took half a step back, and dropped his gaze.

The next morning, I woke up early and found Edmund’s glasses on the nightstand.

The study door was slightly ajar.

I raised my hand to knock, but the voices from inside reached me first.

Edmund’s voice came through, raw and shredded, every word torn out of his throat.

“I can’t let her have it.”

“Sadie. I can’t let Rowena have my child.”

Sadie’s voice shot up.

“Edmund, that’s your baby!”

A beat of dead silence.

Then his voice came again, suddenly soft.

Like he was confessing a secret he’d buried too long.

“But I only want yours, Sadie.”

So quiet. So certain.

Like a knife straight into my chest.

And the next line twisted the blade.

“I’ll take her to get rid of it. Right after the wedding.”

“It’s already arranged, overseas clinic. No one will ever know.”

I stood frozen in the hallway.

Then I lowered my head and let out a small, dry laugh.

Thank God I’d never wavered in my decision to leave.

Thank God agreeing to that Arctic trip was just a decoy.

One hour before the wedding, Edmund pushed open the bridal suite door.

White gauze curtains swayed in the breeze.

Empty.

He frowned, pulled out his phone, and dialed.

Voicemail.

He tried again. Voicemail again.

His fingers around the phone started to go cold.

The makeup artist pushed the door open. He grabbed her arm.

“Where’s the bride?”

She flinched, stammering that the bride had never shown up today and had called an hour ago saying she didn’t need her services.

Edmund let go, stepped back, and bolted out the door.

In the hallway, Sadie came running toward him, her bridesmaid dress bunched up in her hands. Before she could speak, he had her by the shoulders.

“Where’s your sister?”

“I asked you! Where is she?”
