Three full days, and there was still no word from Lucy.

Grayson zoned out in another meeting.

When the project manager got a figure wrong, his face darkened all at once.

“You brought this into a meeting?”

He tossed the file back onto the table.

Nobody in the room dared make a sound.

After everyone cleared out, Grayson sat alone in the conference room.

His phone stayed silent.

He opened his chat with Lucy. The last message was still the one from before the wedding, reminding her to

be downstairs by five.

No reply.

He wanted to call.

Even knowing it probably wouldn’t go through.

Grayson thought again of her standing on that platform, saying “You lose.”

The anger flared back up in his chest.

Why should he be the one to break first?

The second that thought crossed his mind, Grayson went still.

So this was how hard it was to reach out first.

Then all those years. Every time they’d treated Lucy like she wasn’t there, how had she found it in herself to

chase after them crying, begging them to notice her?

She must have felt just as wronged, just as hurt.

And in the end, she was always the one who had to give in. Even apologize.

Grayson closed his eyes.

For the first time, he understood just how suffocatingly cruel that game had actually been.

He’d just picked up his phone when the conference room door pushed open. Sienna.

She’d grown up alongside him and he’d personally trained her as his assistant. Sienna knew full well that the

understanding between them never stopped at the office door.

Whether it was a business decision or a private mood, usually one look from him told her everything she

needed to know.

“Still thinking about Lulu?”

Grayson changed the subject.

“You need something?”

Sienna paused.

“Are you kicking me out?”

“I want to be alone for a while.”

Her eyes welled up instantly.

“Isn’t now, with Lulu gone, exactly the time when the two of us understand each other best?”

“How is this any different from the game? You treated her like she wasn’t there even when she was standing right next to you. So why does the second she’s gone, you fall apart like this?”

Grayson looked up at her.

Sienna let out a bitter laugh at herself.

“Is Lucy the only reason you’d ever spare me a second glance?”

Grayson’s expression changed.

“Sienna, that was just a game.”

“No it wasn’t!”

She cut him off, eyes red.

“I’m the one who came up with it. I saw the way you kept looking at her more and more, and I knew. One day she’d be all you saw, and I’d be the one left over.”

“We’re the ones who grew up together. Why should she get to walk in and take you away from me?”

“See? The second she disappeared, you were mine again.”

The room went dead quiet.

Grayson looked at her, and for the first time, she felt like a stranger.

So the “understanding” between them had, from the very start, been nothing but a shared effort to shut Lucy

out.

And he had let it go on for twenty years.

“Sienna.”

He took a half-step back.

“Don’t get this close to me again.”

She froze.

“The Denver office needs a new manager. It’s a good chance to prove yourself.”

Sienna finally panicked.

“You’re transferring me out?”

“It’s a good fit for you. Isn’t this the kind of thing you’ve always wanted to try?”

Her face went white, her lips trembling for a long moment before all she could do was cry.

At the door, she turned back and asked,

“I was just afraid of being left behind.”

“If Lucy ever comes back, will you tell me?”

Grayson didn’t answer.

The moment the door shut, he finally set aside every last shred of pride and hit call.

This time, he was willing to be the one who broke first.

But all he got was a cold, automated message.

“The number you have dialed is no longer in service.”
