I nodded, hugging a big woven plastic sack to my chest.

Inside were my pajamas, my comics, a bag of hot Cheetos, and my handheld game console.

Plus one stuffed rabbit Sebastian had given me as a kid.

I hadn’t planned on bringing it.

But it had survived every scolding right alongside me.

That counted for something. Comrades in arms.

Weston sat on the couch without looking at me.

“Once you leave, don’t come crawling back in tears.”

I nodded.

“Don’t worry, Dad.”

“If I cry, I’ll find somewhere private to do it. I won’t embarrass the Sterling name.”

Sebastian stood at the top of the stairs, glaring darkly at my sack.

“Daisy Sterling. That’s all you’re taking?”

“That’s plenty.”

“You don’t want the card?”

“No.”

“The jewelry?”

“No.”

“The designer clothes?”

“No.”

All of it felt like a costume. Refined, expensive, and never quite mine, the way a kid feels playing dress-up in someone else’s clothes.

Josie stood in the middle of the living room.

She’d already changed into a new dress the staff had prepared for her. Beautiful, elegant, perfectly fitted.

Now that looked like a Sterling daughter.

I waved at her.

“Sis, good luck.”

“Tomorrow, five a.m., the trainer knocks right on time.”

“He hates it when people are late.”

“One minute late means ten extra minutes of planks.”

Josie’s expression stiffened.

I kept going.

“Also, my mom likes to inspect your nails.”

“My dad likes to quiz you on world news at breakfast.”

“My brother hates rambling.”

“Oh, and the dog’s name is Newton.”

“He looks down on people too.”

That finally broke her.

“Get out.”

I felt like I’d been granted a pardon.

“You got it!”

I dragged my sack straight out the Sterling front door.

The evening wind hit my face, and I breathed it in deep.

The smell of freedom.

With a hint of car exhaust.

Still better than that cold, sterile perfume that hung in the Sterling living room.
