He Saved A Dog But Let His Wife’s Father Die Chapter 09

Joseph staggered backward, papers scattering across the floor.

His phone rang abruptly. The caller ID read Ava.

He stared blankly at the screen for several seconds before answering.

“Joseph?” Her voice was gentle over the line, “Are you home yet? Did she like the surprise? I hope it helped

smooth things over.”

A lengthy silence hung on the line before a hoarse, raw male voice finally spoke. “Camilla’s gone.”

Ava froze.

Joseph stared at the documents strewn across the floor, his vision Swimming in a haze of red. “She left. She’s leaving me…”

The day after Camilla drove away, Joseph did not report to the hospital.

Curtains were drawn tight, plunging the house into darkness like a wartime bunker.

He twisted open another liquor bottle and took a burning gulp. The liquor burned going down, but it

couldn’t drown the self-loathing churning in his gut.

Divorce. Termination. She’d made both decisions without a single word to him.

What did he even mean to her? What had their five-year marriage amounted to?

The front door opened from outside. Ava stepped in carrying a takeout container. “Joseph… How could you let yourself get like this?”

Joseph leaned back on the sofa and said nothing.

A flicker of hope ignited in Ava’s chest.

Camilla had left. She was the only one remaining beside Joseph now.

“Joseph, you treated your wife so well all these years, and she never appreciated how hard you worked. If I were in her place, I would never treat you this way.”

Joseph finally lifted his gaze to meet hers.

Ava’s heart hammered. She thought her long-awaited chance had arrived, and she summoned her courage to speak.

“Joseph, I’ve had feelings for you ever since military medical university. Your wife walked away from you, but I never will. I’ll stay by your side, forever.”

She sank onto the sofa beside him, her hand resting tentatively on his knee. “Joseph… look at me, please.”

Joseph slowly raised his eyes. There was no trace of desire in his gaze-only bone-chilling cold. “That day in my office, you read the documents Camilla asked you to pass on, didn’t you?”

‘Ava’s blood ran cold. Her smile froze on her face. “What documents?”

Joseph snatched the divorce agreement off the coffee table and hurled it in front of her. Ava’s face drained of

all color.

“You read them. You knew exactly what they were. Why did you lie and claim they were equipment

procurement forms?”

Ava’s lips trembled, struggling to form a coherent sentence. “I was afraid it would disrupt your work. I planned to tell you once your shifts ended…”

r..

“After your shift ended?” He repeated the words slowly, each syllable a blade.
